cognac: what you need to know

History of cognac A. de Fussigny

A small company was founded in 1814 on the banks of the Charente River – in the very center of cognac production. The owners of the plant set themselves the goal of combining traditional French developments in products with the best modern innovations.

There are many white spots and mysterious legends in the history of the brand. According to one version, the name of the famous cognacs from Grand Champagne was given by a simple Italian merchant who came to France to establish trade relations. Having tasted local drinks, Alfonso Fussini, who later changed his surname to Fussigny (in the French manner), first started exporting, and then the production of distillates.

It is said that he found truly outstanding specimens for his collection in different parts of the region. The tireless trader gave all his strength to the improvement of cognacs and the development of his own brand, which could not go unnoticed. Inexpensive, but high-quality drinks A. de Fussigny began to be in demand.

A significant contribution to the development of the Maison de Fussigny was made by the hereditary cognac master Alain Royer, who in 1989 sold his share in Louis Royer and devoted himself to a new project. It is thanks to a professional blender that A. de Fussigny cognacs have been appreciated in many countries of the world. Around the same time, the company, which did not have its own vineyards, entered into an agreement with more than a thousand growers for uninterrupted supplies of raw materials.

Since 2008, the cognac house “A. de Fussigny” belongs to the Russian trading house “Aroma”, and the famous drink is still produced in Grande Champagne.

The specifics of the production of cognac A. de Fussigny

The main pride of the A. de Fussigny brand is high quality raw materials. Grape varieties Uni Blanc and Folle Blanche (the most popular in cognac production) are harvested in the prestigious regions of Petite and Grande Champagne. The peculiarity of these territories is the high content of chalk rocks, which, in combination with a warm, humid climate and high mineral content of the soil, provides the best conditions for the ripening of fragrant fruits. Grapes harvested in Grande Champagne have optimal sugar content, balanced tannins, bright taste, which give cognacs fullness, sophistication and complexity of the bouquet.

When creating drinks, the house of A. de Fussigny does not rely on volume, but on the quality of products. For the production of distillates, “Charentes alambiks” are used here – distillation stills made by hand from copper. Six of them were made back in the middle of the XNUMXth century, today they give the richest spirits with a long aftertaste.

The distillation is performed twice, separating in the second stage the very heart of the distillate, which after aging (at least 2 years) will turn into a flavored drink.

For cognac maturation, oak barrels are used: first – young, then – old. Thus, the amount of tannins is gradually reduced, fully revealing the taste of the product.

The cellars of the distillery are located on the banks of the Charente, which guarantees an optimal level of humidity.

The vintage distillates are carefully selected by vintage to achieve the highest concentration of aromatics to convey A. de Fussigny’s unique style of harmony, softness and finesse. Such samples are poured into special bottles signed by the assemblage master and packaged in a gift box.
