Coffee is consistently included in the top list of ingredients for homemade cosmetics and ready-made beauty products. This is generally an unusual product. But first things first.
Benefits and effectiveness of coffee face masks
Traditionally, coffee grounds, as well as freshly ground coffee, are used:
as part of masks for solving various problems of facial skin;
as scrubs for the face and body.
Answer our quiz to find out which mask you need.
Preparing a coffee mask in our kitchen, we are waiting for the effect:
toning;
fat burning;
drainage – getting rid of edema, improving blood circulation;
skin smoothing;
getting rid of imperfections and black dots;
even complexion.
Is it possible to get such a result? Theoretically, yes. But you can definitely count on:
exfoliation (exfoliation), if you rub the skin with coffee particles;
wonderful, invigorating aroma;
the pleasure of taking care of yourself.
Everything else depends on the quality of the coffee you use, since the amount of valuable substances varies significantly from variety to variety.
Mechanism of action on the skin
Caffeine tones, improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, evens out complexion. Helps keep skin youthful.
Vitamin V3 enhances the protective functions of the skin, soothes it.
Fruit acids (low concentration) have an exfoliating effect, facilitating mechanical exfoliation.
Proteins (amino acids) support the structure of the skin.
Lipitor (low concentration); coffee, like any other plant germ oils, contain fatty acids useful for the skin, necessary for the lipid membranes of cells.
Polisaharidы (including mannose) rejuvenate and moisturize the skin, nourish the cells.
- Antioxidant Polyphenols protect against environmental stress and slow down the aging process.
As a biologically active product, coffee has an effect on the skin, which, however, is not comparable with the effect of its ingestion, as well as the external use of pure caffeine and vitamin B3 in cosmetics.
Initially, coffee is designed to drink and get a charge of vivacity. Why waste it on other than its intended use?
Indications for use
To be honest, the first and main reason for using any homemade masks is the love of cosmetic creativity. Coffee is very popular as an anti-cellulite scrub, and also as a body wrap. Caffeine really improves microcirculation, lymphatic drainage, smoothes the skin.
For the face, coffee grounds are perhaps a bit rough. However, this does not stop lovers of an invigorating drink, and they use a coffee scrub to:
smooth the skin;
clear it of acne;
tone up.
Historically, dried coffee grounds have been used as a scrub.
Admittedly, their hopes are not unfounded, but you cannot determine how much caffeine or vitamin B and other useful substances are in such a mask. So the effectiveness is still in question. But there are unequivocal contraindications for coffee scrub. Here is the list:
herpes in the acute stage;
rosacea (caffeine may be included in products for skin with rosacea, but its use on its own, especially in combination with warming honey, poses a risk for reactive skin);
the presence of wounds;
any infectious dermatological diseases;
skin sensitivity;
allergy to any component of the mask, including coffee itself.
What to give preference to: a homemade mask or ready-made cosmetics
The advantages of a homemade coffee mask include:
the pleasure of cooking;
wonderful aroma;
tonic effect (including due to skin scrubbing);
more complete development of the resource of the product (first, coffee is brewed to obtain a drink, and then dried coffee grounds are used).
There is no need to prepare a mask, and this saves time.
- Unlike a homemade mask, ready-made cosmetics use the optimal concentration of active ingredients.
Caffeine is added to facial cosmetics, and it does not smell like coffee. But you get a different, no less wonderful flavor.
If we talk about a scrub bought in a store or a pharmacy, then you will definitely feel all the declared properties, including an instant tonic effect, since the effectiveness of cosmetics is confirmed by tests.
The possibility of using it in its pure form for the care of the area around the eyes is limited. Meanwhile, it is here that caffeine is appropriate, because, by increasing lymphatic drainage and blood circulation, it helps to get rid of dark circles and swelling under the eyes. Caffeine is included in most creams for this zone. For example, intensely moisturizing cream-gel for the eye contour Hydraphase Intense Eyes, La Roche-Posay.
As a scrub, coffee grounds are too rough for dry and sensitive skin. It is risky to use a similar natural product after sunburn.
A homemade coffee mask will lose out to a caffeinated night cream because it will not allow you to fully use its draining properties. Thanks to the action of caffeine, night moisturizers leave the skin fresh and well-groomed, and you can’t leave a moisturizing coffee mask overnight.
Safety measures
Use the finest grind coffee as a facial scrub.
Do not keep the mask longer than the recommended time – it will be more difficult to wash it off, and there is no point in “overexposure”: everything that the skin can absorb, it takes in the first 15 minutes.
Make sure you’re not allergic to any of the homemade makeup ingredients. In the case of coffee, be especially careful: caffeine tends to aggravate allergic reactions.
Engage in the preparation of homemade cosmetics only if the process itself gives you pleasure. Ready-made funds still act faster and more efficiently.
