Coexisting diseases of Krzysztof Krawczyk. Which was the most dangerous in the course of COVID-19?

Krzysztof Krawczyk suffered from chronic diseases. He had arrhythmia and atrial fibrillation and underwent hip surgery. At the time of his death, the singer was 74 years old. A few months after Krawczyk’s death, his wife Ewa admitted that the artist had been struggling with Parkinson’s disease for years.

A year ago, in an interview with Medonet, Dr. Bartosz Fiałek pointed out one more factor which, in the case of Krzysztof Krawczyk, increased the risk of a severe course of the disease caused by SARS-CoV-2.

– Each accompanying disease may worsen the course of the infection. Not only SARS-CoV-2, but also other infections can exacerbate the course of our chronic diseases. Mr Krzysztof Krawczyk’s diseases could, therefore, be risk factors for the severe course of COVID-19 – said Fiałek. – We must also remember that Krawczyk had a disease that is the most important risk factor for the severe course of COVID-19 – obesity. At least that can be concluded. Obesity is a disease, not a symptom, although in our country that is not what is said about it. The NIH statistics clearly show that those infected with COVID-19 with a BMI above 30 are hospitalized most often – explained the physician.

Bartosz Fiałek also drew attention to comorbidities that are particularly dangerous in the case of COVID-19 infection.

– Chronic heart failure, diabetes, hypertension and obesity are diseases of the so-called fours that significantly increase the risk of severe COVID-19. Two-thirds of all hospitalizations in the US are associated with at least one of these diseases. In the case of Mr. Krawczyk, obesity was the main risk factor, although heart disease, of course, also influenced the course of COVID-19.

Why do covid patients die after leaving the hospital?

Krzysztof Krawczyk was hospitalized due to infection with SARS-CoV-2. After a few days, the singer was discharged from the hospital. Death took place on the third day after returning home. Similar situations happen more and more often. Bartosz Fiałek explained a year ago why this is happening.

– The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 is so new that it is difficult to predict its individual course in a patient. The fact that the patient had a positive test for SARS-CoV-2 infection, and now it is negative, does not mean that it is 100 percent. healthy. We still have long covid, i.e. a set of symptoms that are a complication of an active disease and persist after its cure. They may concern as much as 32 percent. people after infection. The disease itself increases the risk of thromboembolic events, which may result in delayed death. This means that we can cure ourselves from active COVID-19, but still have health problems related to SARS-CoV-2 infection, which can even lead to death. – explained Fiałek.

  1. The editorial office recommends: “I have been suffering from long COVID for two years”. More and more people are struggling with this disease

Can such situations be avoided? The answer is not clear cut.

– If the patient has recovered, has no symptoms of acute infection, and his clinical condition is good and corresponds to the test results, the patient may be discharged from the hospital – explained Dr. Fiałek. – I myself have seen many times patients who contracted COVID-19, and returned to the hospital in a week or two due to breathlessness. Imaging showed advanced changes in the lungs. A negative test result does not guarantee that we are fully healthy, because it informs about the lack of active infection, but complications after infection may be a direct threat to the health and life of the patient.
