In contrast to direct, undisguised power pressure (to force), coercion is covered by something. Coercion can be hidden behind an external task, be mediated by overt or hidden threats, or take shape as a necessity caused by circumstances. See Coerce and Force

As a rule, coercion is carried out through negative motivation, through the use of the threat of violence, force, etc. More sophisticated coercion is created by positive motivation — and then this is called arousing interest.

Freedom and coercion
