Greetings, reader! When you hear something about Mexico, what do you imagine? Cacti, tequila, funny guys in sombreros and maracas? Of course, this is all part of Mexican culture. And the inhabitants of this sultry country came up with such an interesting drink – it’s called Michelada.
This is a truly amazing cocktail, because it combines the refreshing taste of citrus fruits, the spicy sharpness of Tabasco, the cheerful fizz of beer and … oyster sauce. Yes, Monsieur knows a lot about entertainment!
History of origin
There is no exact data on how Michelada appeared. Mexicans tell the story of its origin in different ways, as well as prepare it in different ways. But judging by the composition, it shouldn’t have been there at all, because it’s just some kind of tin. 🙂
There are several common versions of the history of this alcoholic cocktail:
- In 1910, General Don Augusto Michel, who fought for the independence of Mexico, treated his soldiers to a homemade cocktail. Thus, he raised their morale, and the soldiers, in turn, named the cocktail from the first letters of his last name. However, in 2005, it turned out that this version was invented by a brand that sold a ready-made mixture for cooking Michelada – no Augusto ever treated them to Mexican soldiers.
- In the 1950s, in a Mexican club, bartender Michel Esper experimented with drinks and eventually came up with this beer cocktail. In honor of him, the drink was named Michel lemonade, and then shortened to Michelada.
Another version claims that the name Michelada stands for three Spanish words Mi Chela Helada, which literally translates as “my cold beer.”
Food and energy value
Michelada is based on a mixture of peppers, sauces and spices with beer. The cocktail is completely unsweetened, and therefore has a low calorie content per 100 ml: only 115 kcal. BJU (in grams): 1,1 / 0,3 / 8,9.
Michelada Beer Cocktail Recipe
You can cook Michelada at home. We will use the classic cocktail recipe with tomato juice and several sauces. It will have an unusual taste for a Russian person, but this is all its charm … after all, tequila is favored in Russia, despite the fact that most of our compatriots have never seen Agave.
Composition and proportions
The Michelada recipe includes the following ingredients:
- tomato juice (you can squeeze it yourself, or buy ready-made tomato juice) – 30 ml;
- light beer (corona or any other beer with a neutral taste will do) – 0,5 liters;
- lime – 1 piece;
- oyster sauce – 2 teaspoons;
- Worcestershire sauce – 2 teaspoons
Tabasco sauce is also an obligatory ingredient for Michelada, but it is very spicy. Therefore, it should be added to taste – depending on how spicy you want to get the drink.
Stages of preparation
Cooking Michelada is quite simple. To do this, you just need to alternately mix the ingredients:
- Pour tomato juice into a glass.
- Cut the lime in half and pour the juice from one half into the glass.
- Add Worcestershire sauce and oyster sauce.
- Add Tabasco sauce to taste. If you’re sensitive to spiciness, it’s best to limit it to very little Tabasco.
- At the end, pour the whole mixture with cold beer and mix gently.
Serve the drink in a tall cocktail glass. A prerequisite – the glass must first be well cooled. It is also recommended to decorate it with a salty border for a brighter taste.
Sometimes Michelada is prepared with cider. It turns out a non-standard and sweeter taste. In some regions of Mexico, tropical fruit juice is added to this cocktail, and somewhere even clam juice.
Where to Drink Michelada
Michelada is a somewhat non-standard alcoholic cocktail. It is not included in the official IBA list, and therefore not all establishments make it. The surest solution would be to look for this drink in themed Mexican bars. For example, in Moscow it is Veladora, Casa Agave (restaurant), Na Chile.
Well, if not a single Mexican institution has been found in your city, you can prepare a traditional drink yourself according to the recipe that I left above.
Interesting Facts
Some interesting facts about this Mexican cocktail:
- In Mexico and Latin American countries, Michelada is abbreviated as Chelada. From Spanish, the word Helada is translated as “cold”.
- Mexicans believe that there is no better hangover cure than Michelada. Therefore, while our compatriots are treating their head and dehydration with brine, in Mexico they drink a cold, life-saving cocktail in the morning and afternoon.
- Unlike many other cocktails, Michelada does not require a special presentation – the construction of “pyramids” of decorations and pouring alcohol in layers. All you need for this cocktail is a set of sauces and a really cold glass.
- Sometimes oyster sauce in a cocktail is replaced with soy sauce. The taste, of course, changes somewhat from this, but so do the Mexicans themselves … so, it turns out to be a completely official variation of the drink.
