Cocktail Manhattan (Manhattan) – an unforgettable combination of bourbon, vermouth and bitters

“Manhattan” is rightfully called the King of Cocktails, created over 100 years ago, it does not lose its position today. Its simple composition, quick preparation and excellent taste have made it the favorite drink of many connoisseurs of alcohol in America and Europe. Most bartenders advise starting their acquaintance with cocktails from “Manhattan”, as it is considered a classic, that is, a role model.

Historical information

The invention of the Manhattan cocktail is credited to Jenny Jerome, the daughter of the famous New York stockbroker Leonard Jerome, who after marriage became Lady Churchill. It is this woman who is the mother of one of the greatest Britons in history – Winston Churchill.

In 1874, Jenny Jerome hosted a dinner party in honor of New York Governor and US presidential candidate Samuel James Tilden. According to legend, she personally mixed the ingredients of the cocktail. But the inconsistency of dates in the biography of Jenny Churchill (she was in Europe on the day of the dinner party) casts doubt on this theory.

A more plausible version is that the Manhattan cocktail was invented by Dr. Ian Marshall, who was the first to mix whiskey, Italian vermouth and angostura bitter. The drink was named after the establishment where it was created – “Manhattan Club”. Lady Churchill’s name was only used to popularize the drink. In 1961, “Manhattan” was included in the collection of cocktails IBA (International Bartenders Association).
