- History of the Blue Lagoon Cocktail
The phrase “blue lagoon” itself evokes different associations for each of us. Perhaps the majority will immediately imagine the extraordinary white beaches and azure shores of the seas and oceans. Someone will remember the beautiful bright blue lakes. For cinephiles, the first association will be the film of the same name with Brooke Shields in the title role. And for avid bar lovers, the first picture in your head will be an unusual and bright cocktail. We studied the composition and selected recipes for the alcoholic and non-alcoholic version of the Blue Lagoon.
Cocktail ingredients Blue lagoon
To prepare a cocktail, we need:
- a hurricane glass (or other cocktail glass);
- cocktail spoon;
- measured jigger (if necessary, can be replaced with a glass);
- tubes;
- shaker (it can be replaced with a thermos or other resealable vessel).
The classic Blue Lagoon consists of vodka, Blue Curacao liqueur (which gives the cocktail a sky-azure color), soda and ice. For decoration, use fruit – a slice of orange, lime or pineapple.
The recipe for an alcoholic cocktail Blue Lagoon at home
The cocktail recipe is pretty simple. The main nuance is not so much in the composition as in the proportions. We offer a classic version, but you can stick to your own feelings and wishes. And remember: the more alcohol, the stronger the drink.
Vodka | 50 ml |
Ice | 200 g |
Liqueur Blue Curacao | 20 ml |
Lemonade or soda | 150 ml |
Decoration | slice of orange, lime or pineapple |
Step 1. Prepare a glass
First of all, take a beautiful glass, the best is a hurricane, but you can use any other beautiful glass that you like. Add ice cubes to it.
Step 2. Mixing vodka and liquor
Combine the vodka and liqueur in a shaker (or homemade equivalent), then pour them into a glass. If it is not possible to mix, you can pour the ingredients into the hurricane one by one.
Step 3: Add Soda
Then pour lemonade or soda into the glass, mix with a cocktail spoon.
Step 4. Decorate
Garnish the finished cocktail with a slice of orange, lime or pineapple – and you’re done!
By the way
Some bartenders offer to grind ice in a blender, and immediately add lemonade to vodka and liquor in a shaker. But here it is a matter of taste: choose your option and interfere as you like.
The recipe for a non-alcoholic Blue Lagoon cocktail at home
The non-alcoholic version of the cocktail will please those who try not to abuse alcohol. The composition is the same, only some ingredients change

Lemon juice | 20 ml |
Ice | 200 g |
Decoration | slice of orange, lime or pineapple |
Step 1. Prepare a glass
Prepare a beautiful glass, put ice in it.
Step 2. Mixing the Ingredients
Mix the remaining ingredients (except for the fruit decoration) in a shaker or, in its absence, pour in turn into a glass: lemonade, lemon juice, and then blue syrup. Stir with a cocktail spoon.
Step 3. Decorate
The cocktail is ready! It remains to decorate it with a fruit slice.
By the way
The Blue Lagoon with homemade lemonade can be considered an ideal option for making a cocktail. This summer drink with an interesting citrus sweet and sour taste with a slight bitterness of lemon peel essential oil tastes great with other ingredients.
Alcoholic cocktail recipe Blue Lagoon with mineral water
The classic recipe for the Blue Lagoon at home can be slightly modified. We keep the same classic composition of vodka, liquor and ice, but instead of sweet soda, we use regular sparkling water. We do not change anything in proportions and the order of preparation, but add another teaspoon of lemon juice

Ice | 200 g |
Lemon juice | 1 hours. Spoon |

Artem Derevyanko, bartender, universal chef, BulvarCafe:
The Blue Lagoon is one of the classic cocktails. However, he does not have a single universally recognized recipe. Now many bartenders replace vodka with rum or gin or add notes of orange.
The cocktail is easy even to make at home – no need for a shaker, the Blue Lagoon is easy to prepare with a simple stir. Moreover, sometimes a shaker can even do a disservice.
“For a long time working in public catering, I saw a lot of “fountains” and “fireworks” worse than on the day of the city,” says Artem Derevyanko. – Due to inexperience, some bartenders poured soda directly into the shaker, and then carried out the “shaking”. The “furor” produced at the opening of the shaker made a strong impression – including on the guests.
Try adding liquor (or syrup for the non-alcoholic version) to the finished cocktail in a thin stream on top – this will give a spectacular look of “lava flow” in the cocktail.
History of the Blue Lagoon Cocktail
There is a legend that the cocktail was invented in the XNUMXth century by the famous French artist Paul Gauguin. Gauguin, for medical reasons, was deprived of the pleasure of enjoying absinthe, especially popular at that time. Therefore, the artist had to experiment with various local alcoholic drinks while traveling in the Caribbean. However, there is no documentary evidence of this version.
The real story of the appearance of the cocktail, although it begins in Paris, but much later – in the 60-70s of the XX century. The author of the cocktail is bartender Andy McElhone from Harry’s New York Bar. The date of origin is controversial – some sources indicate 1972, others 1960 – when the blue liquor itself entered the European market.
