Cocktail B-52 – 3 best recipes, composition and history

Greetings, dear readers of my blog!

My note today is for those who are going to throw a house party, and at the same time want to please the guests with drinks more interesting than Bloody Mary and Gin and Tonic.

I suggest you learn how to make a popular cocktail named after a famous bomber! The B-52 recipe is quite simple. It can be reproduced at home without special tools and many years of experience as a bartender.

With a little practice, you can mix up spectacular layered shots for your guests, or give them a master class on how to prepare this popular drink in different ways. In this case, you won’t have to think long about the theme of the evening. Cocktail creativity will captivate even those who are usually indifferent to alcohol. But, before starting experiments, we will study the materiel.

Recipe for making B-25 at home

B-52 is a layered cocktail of three liqueurs. It belongs to the Short Drink category – drinks that are drunk in one sip. The combination of ingredients used in this classic recipe shot is believed to aid digestion, which is why it is usually served after a meal. But in the process of a feast or a buffet table, it will be very appropriate.

To begin with, I will tell you about the three basic options for the b-52 recipe. To prepare any of them, you will need coffee, orange and cream liqueurs. We will talk about the proportions and specific brands of components further. In the meantime, here are the recipes.

Classic Edition

The most important thing in preparing a b52 cocktail according to any recipe is to make sure that its layers do not mix with each other. Professional bartenders have special bar spoons for this, by which they pour each new ingredient into a glass.

But in my experience, it is quite possible to use a regular spoon or a wide knife instead. The main thing is to cool the tool before use.

The procedure for preparing B-52 according to the classic recipe is as follows:

  • pour coffee liqueur into a shot glass;
  • pour cream liqueur over coffee (on the blade of a knife or the back of a spoon to prevent mixing);
  • in the same way, pour over the creamy orange liqueur.

I strongly recommend that you practice making a drink before a party in order to understand exactly how to pour liqueurs in layers. As a rule, a few shots are enough to understand the principle and make the same beautiful cocktails as in the photo on Instagram.

Hot B 52

The most spectacular of all B-52 recipes is burning, or, in the terminology of bartenders, Flaming. It is prepared according to the classic recipe.

The whole trick is in the method of filing:

  • in the finished drink, the top layer is set on fire (it is most convenient to do this with a match or a burning wooden skewer);
  • a cocktail straw is quickly inserted into the stack so that it reaches the bottom;
  • drink a drink through a straw with one “breath”.

You can’t hesitate here, otherwise the straw will simply melt and become unusable. Plus, burning plastic can get into the drink, which is clearly not good for him.

Cold B 52

Unlike the previous version, this b52 recipe is completely fireproof. But it does not look as impressive as a classic or Flaming shot.

According to this recipe, the drink is prepared by pouring coffee, cream and orange liqueurs into a shaker in turn. Only over the separation of the layers here you can not conjure – all the components are simply mixed and poured into a glass.

This shot is served on ice. It is advisable to hold the shots on an ice pad for a while before serving, so that the drink is properly cooled.

What is this cocktail

During the preparation of the drink, the guests of the party can tell his story. There are several options for the origin of the Bi-52 cocktail. Perhaps the most interesting is the version that it was invented by American pilots during World War II, when they were quartered in Italy. But there are other options:

  • the drink was invented by one of the musicians of the B-52s;
  • the cocktail was named after the famous Boeing B-52;
  • to the invention of the drink, the creators were prompted by women’s hairstyles fashionable in the 1960s (named, by the way, in honor of the same Boeing).

Even the place of invention of this shot is not exactly known – Canada, Malibu or some other US province. But you, as the organizer of the party, this is only at hand. You can invite guests to find the most reliable version of the origin of the B-52 on the Internet, or dream up and come up with your own story.

But, of course, behind all these entertainments, one should not forget about the rules for preparing and serving shots. It does not matter that you make them at home, the recipe and etiquette must be followed.

What bowl is it served in?

Cocktail B52 is traditionally served in a smooth glass stack and complemented with a cocktail tube. The volume of the stack is from 40 to 60 ml.

Fortress

Your guests will probably want to know how many degrees B-52 is in, especially after they try a couple of servings. The strength of this drink is 30% vol.

Usually, after the first shot of B-52, the taster feels a strong emotional lift. But it is not recommended to drink more than 4 shots in a short period of time – you can get very drunk.

Product composition and proportions

Above, I already told you how to cook B-52 according to the classic recipe. It’s time to list what you need for proper cooking:

  • Kalua coffee liqueur – 1/3 of the total;
  • creamy liqueur Baileys – 1/3 of the total volume;
  • orange liqueur Grand Mariner – 1/3 of the total volume.

This B-52 recipe is “legalized” by the International Bartending Association (IBA). But it is allowed to replace the Grand Mariner liquor with Cointreau or Triple Sec.

In addition, there are several more official versions of the B-52 recipe. They are prepared according to classical technology. The differences are only in the set of components.

Cocktail variations

  1. B-51 – instead of orange liqueur, Frangelico nut liquor is added to the drink.
  2. With a Full Payload (with a full load) – such a B-52 should be made with an additional layer of Frangelico liqueur and Bacardi rum.
  3. b-53 – the creamy component is replaced with sambuca, or absinthe is used instead of orange liqueur.
  4. B-54 – Triple Sec is replaced with Amaretto.
  5. B-55 – the top layer of the shot is not made from orange liqueur, but from Xentha absinthe.
  6. B-57 – creamy Baileys in the composition of the drink is replaced with mint schnapps.

For some reason, there is no recipe number B-62 in this series. Perhaps you and your guests can guess what caused such injustice. Or maybe you will come up with a new version of the cocktail composition for number B-b2.

Energy value per 100 g of product

Depending on the volume of stacks used, take from 15 to 20 ml of each ingredient.

How to serve and drink

B-52 is traditionally served in stacks of thick smooth glass. The drink, in any of its variants, is drunk through a cocktail tube in just one gulp.

B-52, prepared according to the Flaming recipe, is set on fire before serving. It is more convenient to do this with a match or a set fire to a sliver (toothpick, wooden skewer). It’s easy to burn your fingers with a lighter. As soon as the top layer lights up, quickly lower the tube into the glass to the very bottom and drink a shot.

Variant B-52, prepared according to a cold recipe, is kept on ice before serving, and then served in the same way, with a straw. Ideally, the glass should remain on ice until it fogs up.
