Co-Valsacor is a combined drug used to lower blood pressure. The active substances of the preparation have a much stronger effect than each of these substances used in monotherapy. Like all medicines, Co-Valsacor can also cause various side effects. Check what is worth paying attention to when using Co-Valsacor.
Co-Valsacor is a combined drug intended for adults. The substances contained in the preparation are also used individually, but together they are much more effective. However, some precautions should be taken when using Co-Valsacor.
Co-Valsacor – indications
Co-Valsacor is used for high blood pressure. It is a combined preparation with a pressure-lowering effect. Co-Valsacor contains the angiotensin II receptor antagonist valsartan and the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide.
Co-Valsacor is indicated in adult patients in whom individual therapy with these substances has not brought the expected results.
Co-Valsacor – action
Co-Valsacor is a combination medicine that contains two active substances, the aforementioned valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Valsartan works to lower your blood pressure. This substance belongs to sartans, which are used as drugs to lower blood pressure, but are also effective in the treatment and prevention of diseases of the entire cardiovascular system.
In contrast, hydrochlorothiazide is a diuretic. Thanks to it, a person urinates more, and with it, sodium, potassium, magnesium and chlorine. On the other hand, the excretion of calcium is reduced. The valsartan content in Co-Valsacor reduces the excretion of potassium. The hydrochlorothiazide in Co-Valsacor also causes widening of the blood vessels and a decrease in vascular resistance.
Due to this combination of substances, Co-Valsacor has a stronger effect than both substances used separately. You can notice the reduction in blood pressure after just 2 weeks.
Co-Valsacor – contraindications
It happens that despite the indications for the use of Co-Valsacor, it should not be administered to the patient. Contraindications to the use of the drug are:
- severe renal or hepatic impairment;
- impotence;
- symptomatic hyperuricemia, which is increased blood uric acid levels;
- difficult-to-treat hypokalaemia, i.e. a decrease in the amount of potassium in the blood;
- pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Co-Valsacor – precautions
There are situations in which it is necessary to stop taking the drug, change the dose, or perform additional check-ups.
Valsartan may cause hyperkalaemia which is an increase in the amount of potassium in your blood. Also, do not take potassium supplements while taking Co-Valsacor.
The diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, on the other hand, can cause hypokalaemia, i.e. a decrease in blood potassium levels. Potassium level disturbances can result in serious heart problems, so your doctor may recommend that you have this indicator checked periodically.
Hydrochlorothiazide can affect the overall electrolyte balance of the body and lead to sodium, potassium, chlorine and magnesium deficiencies. Therefore, it is worth checking the level of these ions regularly. Reduced calcium excretion causes the level of calcium in the blood to increase, i.e. hypercalcemia develops. This can lead to undiagnosed hyperparathyroidism, so tests to monitor your parathyroid function are also necessary. Before the examination, treatment with Co-Valsacor should be discontinued after consulting a doctor.
Any symptoms of fluid and electrolyte imbalance or hypotension should also be consulted. People with kidney problems, moderate liver problems and diabetes should exercise extreme caution.
Some people may also develop symptoms of hypersensitivity to Co-Valsacor. This is especially true for people with allergies or bronchial asthma. The preparation should also not be used by people intolerant to lactose.
The patient should also check all medications taken before starting Co-Valsacor.
Co-Valsacor – dosage
Co-Valsacor is in the form of orally coated tablets. The drug should be taken with a meal and washed down with water. Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Adults should take 1 tablet once a day, unless the doctor prescribes a different dosage.
Co-Valsacor – side effect
Co-Valsacor can cause various side effects, but it should be remembered that the benefits of using it outweigh any possible harm. Side effects will not occur in every patient.
The most common side effects of Co-Valsacor are fainting, paraesthesia, dizziness, visual disturbances, fatigue, cough, diarrhea, dehydration, pulmonary edema, tinnitus, muscle and joint pain, renal dysfunction, hypotension, increased uric acid levels in the blood , bilirubin, urea and creatinine as well as neutropenia, hyponaraemia and hypokalaemia.
It should also be remembered that there may be side effects related to the action of individual components of the drug.
Before use, read the leaflet, which contains indications, contraindications, data on side effects and dosage as well as information on the use of the medicinal product, or consult your doctor or pharmacist, as each drug used improperly is a threat to your life or health.
