COVID-19 incidence rates among children are consistent with overall disease rates, according to a CNN study. This is evidenced by statistics showing the situation in some American states. Get to know the details.
- CNN: The five states with the fewest COVID-19 cases per 100 residents, are the lowest rates of coronavirus disease among children
- In states with the highest number of COVID-19 cases per 100 residents, cases of illness among children are among the highest

The number of COVID-19 cases among children and the community in general – dependence
As CNN points out, in the five states with the lowest number of COVID-19 cases per 100. residents, the lowest rates of coronavirus disease among children are also recorded. These states are: Hawaii, Vermont, Maine, Oregon, and Washington. A similar relationship occurs in states with the highest number of COVID-19 cases per 100. residents – North Dakota, Tennessee, South Dakota and Rhode Island. In these regions, rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection among children are among the highest in the United States.
“The state of Utah was an exception,” notes CNN. It’s worth noting, however, that most states report cases among children up to 17 or 18 years of age. The state of Utah has reported cases among children under the age of 14. “This distinction is important,” points out the American station. Some studies have shown that the coronavirus can spread more easily in high school than in primary school.
This is taken into account in the guidelines for reopening schools published last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, an agency of the US federal government). The CDC’s recommendations for secondary schools are much stricter than those for middle and primary schools.
COVID-19 outbreak. Opening schools – CDC guidelines
The new CDC guidelines for reopening schools recommend learning modalities based on thresholds that reflect community transmission rates. These are new cases of COVID-19 reported within seven days per 100. people and the index of «positivity of the SARS-CoV-2 test» – also from the last week. On this basis, four levels of community transmission were distinguished: low (0-9 cases per 100), moderate (10-49), significant (50-99), and high (equal to or greater than 100).
The guidelines of the American agency also take into account activities aimed at limiting the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in educational institutions – the recommendations are addressed to all schools without exception. There are five of them:
- Common and correct use of protective masks
- Keeping a physical distance (approx. 2 m)
- Hand disinfection and hygiene
- Taking care to maintain the hygiene of school facilities
Collaboration with the health department (including “tracking” contacts in connection with coronavirus infections in combination with isolation and quarantine).
The CDC notes that COVID-19 cases among young people are likely to be ‘underrated’ and reminds that most childhood coronavirus infections can be asymptomatic, with the risk of unknowingly spreading the pathogen to others.
