Cloudberry: beneficial properties
The extremely useful cloudberry berry has been popular at all times due to its rich vitamin composition and a wide range of cosmetic and medical properties.
This surprisingly sweet berry ripens “the other way around”: first it turns red, then only turns yellow and takes on an orange hue. Cloudberry grows most often in bogs and swampy forests in the middle zone of the European part of Russia.
Cloudberry berries resemble raspberries in appearance, but differ in their characteristic taste and smell.
Cloudberries have three times more vitamin C than oranges.
Ripe cloudberries contain:
- fiber
- sugar
- proteins
- malic acid
- citric acid
- vitamin C
- vitamin B
- vitamin PP
- vitamin A
- potassium
- phosphorus
- iron
- cobalt
- anthocyanins
In addition, cloudberry berries contain tannins and pectin substances.
The use of cloudberries in medicine
The tocopherols contained in the berry are necessary during pregnancy to support the mother’s body and the birth of a healthy baby.
Due to the natural benefits of cloudberries, its use has antimicrobial, diaphoretic effects. It contains more vitamin A than carrots, which makes cloudberries useful for maintaining eye health. A wide range of biologically active substances allows this plant to be used as an adjuvant in the treatment of vitamin deficiency.
For colds, cloudberries are very useful as a thirst-quenching and nourishing remedy. By the way, when feeding debilitated patients, a mixture of cloudberries and honey is used. The leaves of this plant are famous for their astringent effect, anti-inflammatory, diuretic properties, and help stop bleeding. For ascites, a decoction of cloudberry leaves is often used. And for diseases such as cystitis, dropsy, gout, and in case of metabolic disorders, the leaves can be used as an aid.
Cloudberry roots are effective as a diuretic and for gastritis under conditions of low acidity. In case of increased acidity of the stomach, it is not recommended to use cloudberries. Also, the roots of the plant help with kidney disorders, coughs, colds. In addition, with scabies, the affected skin is lubricated with cloudberry juice.
To prepare a cloudberry infusion, pour boiling water over one tablespoon of leaves (1 cup), leave for 30 minutes, and then strain the infusion.
As a diuretic, the infusion is taken four times a day for a quarter of a glass.
Tea made from the leaves of this plant is very useful. Most often, strawberries are used in cooking. For this tea, you need to take the same amount of cloudberry and strawberry leaves, dry the leaves in a well-ventilated area and replace them with regular tea leaves.
In the heat, a cold cloudberry drink refreshes. Three tablespoons of cloudberry jam are poured with a tablespoon of milk and 100 milliliters of black strong coffee.
The jam used for the drink can be prepared according to the following recipe:
- cloudberries – 1 kilogram
- sugar – 1 kilogram
- water – 0,5-1 glass
You can fill the berries with granulated sugar and let it brew for three to four hours, then boil until tender. You can also first pour water into sugar, put on fire, stirring occasionally, until the syrup boils, and pour the berry into the sugar. After 30 minutes, rub through a sieve and put on fire again for 10 minutes.
The use of cloudberries in cosmetology
Cloudberry is an indispensable component of various hygiene products and medicinal cosmetics. It is a component of many face and body creams, and can be used in shampoo, foam or hair care gel. Cloudberries are also used in the manufacture of shower gels or, for example, liquid soaps.
Due to its high content of vitamin C, cloudberry is a nourishing and refreshing agent for skin and hair.
During periods of stress or increased physical exertion, cloudberry is indispensable for maintaining the condition of the skin: it perfectly protects the skin from the effects of sudden changes in temperature, helps to restore skin tone
Fatty acids contained in cloudberries will help to relieve the feeling of tightness of dry and sensitive skin, which moisturize the skin and restore the balance of protective substances. Cloudberry formulations also help fight skin aging through vitamin E, phytosterols, and carotenoids. Plus, eating cloudberries can help keep your hair and nails strong and healthy.
You can make a cloudberry mask: apply freshly crushed berries to your face for about 15 minutes, then rinse off with warm water. This mask tones, moisturizes and refreshes the skin.
Cloudberry seeds are used to make peels and skin scrubs. Seed oil is added to anti-aging creams and serums as it contains many natural antioxidants. And cloudberry pulp is added to massage preparations.
For dry skin, you can mix fresh crushed cloudberries and heavy sour cream. The mixture is applied to the face and washed off with warm water. For weakened, brittle and dry hair, mix 5 tablespoons of cloudberry leaf infusion, 1 teaspoon of cloudberry oil and 1 egg. The mask is applied to the scalp and hair, washed off after half an hour without the use of cosmetics.
