Clotrimazole is an antifungal cream. This cream is applied to the affected areas. The indication for the application of the cream is mainly various forms of mycoses. Although this drug is safe, it should not be used, for example, by children under 11 years of age, the elderly and women in the first trimester of pregnancy.
Clotrimazole — dinner
Clotrimazole is an antifungal drug that has a wide range of uses. Clotrimazole is a cream and is applied topically to the affected skin. For a package of 20 g of Clotrimazole you have to pay about PLN 2,50. When should you take Clotrimazole?
Clotrimazole – indications
The indication for the use of Clotrimazole is:
- candidiasis of the skin and mucous membranes of the external genital organs,
- superficial skin mycosis caused by the following dermophytes: Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis,
- athlete’s foot,
- mycosis of the groin and body,
- mycosis between the toes, athlete’s foot with secondary infection, such as athlete’s foot
- Tinea versicolor caused by Mallassezia furfur.
Clotrimazole – composition
The active substance of Clotrimazole is clotrimazole. 1 gram of cream contains 10 mg of this substance. For this mycosis cream, the excipients are cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol.
In order for Clotrimazole to retain all its properties, it should be stored at 15-25 degrees C.
Clotrimazole – dosage
Clotrimazole is a medicinal preparation that should be applied topically. Apply the cream in a thin layer to the affected area of the skin and the area around it. Clotrimazole should be used twice a day, preferably in the morning and evening. To see the effects of the treatment, the cream should be applied for at least 4 weeks.
If the mycosis was very severe, its symptoms may disappear after one week of applying Clotrimazole. In the case of mycosis of the mucous membranes of the external genitalia, treatment should last about 1-2 weeks.
Children up to 11 years of age and the elderly should use Clotrimazole only on the express recommendation of a doctor.
Clotrimazole – contraindications
A clear contraindication to the use of Clotrimazole is an allergy or hypersensitivity to the active ingredient clotrimazole or any of the excipients. The cream should not be used by children under 11 years of age and women in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Renal failure is also a contraindication. You should also remember not to use the cream vaginally and avoid contact of the cream with your eyes.
Clotrimazole – precautions
If no improvement is seen after 4 weeks or the symptoms of mycosis worsen, stop the treatment with Clotrimazole and look for the cause of the disease. For this purpose, microbiological tests should be performed.
The use of Clotrimazole should be consulted by a physician by people treated with immunosuppression, after chemotherapy, diabetics and HIV-infected. The same should be done for pregnant and lactating women.
Due to the content of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, clotrimazole can cause an allergic reaction.
Clotrimazole – overdose
Due to the external use of Clotrimazole, overdosing it is almost impossible. It has a very low bioavailability when applied topically. Therefore, there are no known cases of overdosage with Clotrimazole in humans.
Clotrimazole – side effect
Among the side effects of Clotrimazole, the following should be distinguished:
- erythema,
- rash
- hives
- local redness,
- itch,
- occurrence of pimples,
- swelling
- various local symptoms of cream intolerance or hypersensitivity.
The side effect of Clotrimazole can be very bothersome and is an indication to stop the treatment. A common cause of side effects is the preservative of Clotrimazole, i.e. benzyl alcohol.
