Clonazepam is a prescription psychotropic drug. The active substance in Clonazepam is clonazepam, a chemical compound from the benzodiazepine group that acts on the nervous system. Clonazepam is used to treat anxiety, depression, insomnia and other nervous system disorders.

What is the composition of Clonazepam?

The main ingredient in Clonazepam is clonazepam, a substance with hypnotic, relaxing and anxiolytic properties. Clonazepam acts directly on the nervous system.

When is Clonazepam used?

Clonazepam is a medicine used in the treatment of epilepsy, increased nervous tension causing tics and painful muscle spasms, and insomnia, among others. Incidentally, Clonazepam is administered in the treatment of psychosis and depression.

Dosage of Clonazepam

Clonazepam should be taken strictly according to the doctor’s indications and under his supervision. Clonazepam has a strong hypnotic and sedative effect, so you need to take all precautions to avoid overdosing. If symptoms of a Clonazepam overdose do not appear after 4 hours, it is highly likely that they will never occur, but you should seek medical attention nonetheless. Clonazepam can be administered parenterally, in the form of injections or drip infusions, and enterally in the form of tablets.

Contraindications to the use of Clonazepam

Clonazepam should not be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is possible to administer this drug to a pregnant woman or during lactation only in case of absolute indications. If Clonazepam was taken during pregnancy, withdrawal symptoms and the occurrence of the so-called flaccid child with symptoms such as hypothermia, hypotension, breathing difficulties and a lack of suckling reflex. Similar symptoms may occur in a child if a woman takes Clonazepam while breastfeeding – the drug passes into breast milk. Contraindication to the use of Clonazepam is allergy to the active substance of the drug and disorders of the liver or kidneys, respiratory failure, glaucoma, porphyria and muscle weakness. In the elderly, Clonazepam should only be administered when absolutely necessary – it should not be used to treat, for example, insomnia.

Possible side effects of Clonazepam

Clonazepam can cause a number of side effects such as excessive sleepiness, chronic fatigue, headache and dizziness, confusion, low blood pressure, ataxia, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, and visual disturbances. If Clonazepam is taken for a long time it can become addictive. Withdrawal symptoms such as hallucinations, agitation, psychosis, seizures and other disorders may occur when Clonazepam is stopped abruptly.

Precautions when taking Clonazepam

The drug should be discontinued gradually, reducing the daily dose. Clonazepam should not be used concurrently with other hypnotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants and antipsychotics. It should not be combined with the use of muscle relaxants, disulfiram, isoniazid, cimetidine, rifampicin and oral contraceptives. Tell your doctor that you are taking any of these medications, including information about over-the-counter medications. The use of certain over-the-counter medications (such as those obtained with prescription) may increase the toxicity of benzodiazepine derivatives or reduce its effectiveness. You must not operate machinery or drive while taking Clonazepam. The drug reduces the ability to concentrate and may cause excessive sleepiness. Clonazepam should be stored at room temperature, out of the reach of children.
