Climbing Lagoon rose is gaining popularity in landscape design as a plant for decorating arbors, walls and arches. Its popularity is promoted not only by beautiful flowers, but also by unpretentiousness.
History of breeding
A flower culture was bred by the Wilhelm Kordes and Sons company from Germany. The company has been breeding and creating roses since the end of the 50th century. Their main occupation is the hybridization of existing varieties in order to obtain beautiful and unpretentious new varieties. They produce up to 4 thousand hybrids per year. But commodity “tests” pass only 6-XNUMX varieties.
The climbing rose Laguna was received by the company in 1995. But since the duration of the test is 8-10 years, the first mention of the variety appeared only in 2004. At the same time, the company received the rights of the originator for Laguna. True, it is not known whether this hybrid is included in the State Register, or whether it has not yet received official recognition in the Federation.
The company brought out this climbing rose by crossing La Sevillane and Sympathy. Moreover, the first maternal variety is bushy, the second is curly.
Description and characteristics of the Laguna climbing rose variety
Company “V. Kordes and Sons specializes in breeding unpretentious hybrids that do not require special care and growing conditions. Laguna is no different from other varieties of this company. True, it must be borne in mind that its unpretentiousness is indicated for the climatic conditions of Germany. gardeners note the not very good winter hardiness of this climbing rose.
Features:
- bush grows up to 3 m;
- maximum diameter – 1 m;
- flowers are collected in brushes of 8 pieces each;
- it is stated that the Laguna withstands frosts down to -35 ° C;
- leaves are dense, dark green in color with a glossy sheen;
- flowers with a diameter of 10 cm;
- tone dark pink;
- the total number of petals in each flower is 50;
- the texture of the petals and buds is silky;
- Laguna blooms throughout the warm season until autumn frosts in 2 waves;
- the abundance of flowering determines the age of the bush.
The second wave of flowering is not inferior in intensity to the first.
Blue Lagoon
The main difference between this climbing rose and the mother variety is the shade of the petals. They are able to change their color depending on the age of the flower. Initially they are purple. Mature roses take on a light purple hue. The semi-double flowers are smaller than the parent variety and have fewer petals.
The original Laguna is “equipped” with good protection: it has very thorny stems. But Golubaya “distinguished herself” here too. She has even more curved spikes.
Sweet Lagoon
A completely new variety, bred in 2012. She retained all the advantages of the mother variety and acquired new advantages. Large double flowers have a very original aroma, in which there are notes:
- geranium;
- lemon;
- patchouli;
- many other components.
Advantages and disadvantages
The main quality that attracts gardeners in the Laguna variety is a very long flowering. Another significant advantage over other rose bushes is its good frost resistance. This climbing rose can grow in zone IV, as it can withstand frosts down to -28-35 ° C. Theoretically, Laguna can be grown in the gardens of Central Our Country, not forgetting to cover for the winter. But in this regard, not everything is so simple.
In addition to abundant flowering, due to which the foliage is almost invisible, and frost resistance, the Laguna climbing rose has other advantages:
- resistance to most diseases that affect rose bushes, including black spot and powdery mildew;
- ability to tolerate lack of moisture;
- resistance to adverse environmental conditions;
- endurance during prolonged rains;
- the rapid growth of the bush, thanks to which the decoration of the garden occurs with the least amount of time;
- rich pleasant aroma, spreading throughout the garden in summer;
- the petals hardly change color as the flower matures.
The disadvantages of a climbing rose include a significant number of sharp and strong thorns, which make it difficult to care for a bush. Less obvious disadvantages of the Laguna are a small resistance to spider mites and aphids, as well as the need for a winter shelter.
The photo and description of the Laguna climbing rose are very attractive, but gardeners’ reviews of it are usually not very favorable. True, this is not due to the whimsicalness of the plant, but to the peculiarities of its flowering. Faded roses do not fall off, but remain on the bush in brown lumps. It looks ugly, but it is difficult to remove dead flowers: those very sharp spikes interfere. In addition, you can remove the excess if the bush is low. When it grows up to 3 meters, the mission of ennobling the appearance of the plant becomes almost impossible.
Methods of reproduction
Climbing roses are propagated in 4 ways:
- seeds;
- layering;
- cuttings;
- vaccination.
Seeds germinate poorly and should be purchased from a reputable store to avoid regrading. And then the flowers will have to wait longer. Vaccinations are usually carried out by experienced flower growers. This is a relatively complex procedure, especially budding.
With this method, only the bud of a climbing rose is “planted” on the stock. There is another way of grafting: cuttings. The procedure is similar, but instead of a kidney, a part of the stem is used.
At the same time, it is much easier to propagate the bushes with cuttings or layering. The method of propagation by cuttings is the same for plant species. It is even more convenient to get new climbing roses with the help of layering. The stems of these varieties are thin and flexible. Without support, they crawl along the ground. It is enough to deprive a couple of shoots of support and sprinkle them with earth in the middle. If you do this in the spring, in the fall it will be possible to plant young bushes in a new place.
Laguna is propagated by layering in the same way as another rose in the video.
Growing and caring for the Blue Lagoon rose
Purchased cuttings can be planted in autumn or spring. Plants planted in September or early October take root better. But if for some reason the deadlines were missed, you can buy and plant Laguna in the spring, after the soil warms up to 10 ° C.
The general rules for planting Laguna and other plants are the same:
- choose a place to land;
- prepare a hole 0,5 m deep and 60 cm in diameter;
- fill the hole with soil;
- inspect a seedling with bare roots and remove dead parts, if planting is planned with a clod of earth, nothing needs to be done;
- soak the roots in a stimulant solution;
- when planting, evenly distribute the roots over the soil in the pit and make sure that the root neck is at ground level;
- water the seedling abundantly.
But climbing roses have their own characteristics. When preparing the pit, the required distance to vertically located objects is observed: 50 cm. Next to the seedling, it is imperative to install trellises for future shoots.
After planting, the climbing Lagoon is cut off at a height of 20-25 cm from the ground level. In the first 2 weeks, the seedling must be protected from direct sunlight.
In the absence of natural precipitation, it is necessary to water the Laguna quite often in the first year: every 5 days. In subsequent years – once every 10 days.
Because of the abundant flowering, climbing rose Laguna requires frequent top dressing, 4-5 times per season.
Fertilize according to the scheme:
- spring – nitrogen;
- in summer – potassium and phosphorus;
- at the end of the growing season – potassium.
Natural organic matter is applied every 2 years. It has been experimentally established that the combination of humus, ripened compost and bone meal is optimal for Laguna.
Pruning is carried out in the spring, all diseased and dried shoots are removed. In autumn, flowers are harvested that do not tend to fall off on their own.
For the winter, the Laguna is covered after the air temperature drops to -7 ° C. Her shoots are removed from the trellis and laid on the ground. The remaining free space is filled with spruce branches. Spunbond, fallen leaves or coniferous branches are thrown on top. They cover everything with roofing felt and put boards on top.
Pests and diseases
The lagoon is not very resistant to physical pests such as spider mites and aphids. However, there are practically no plants resistant to these parasites. Unless they come from another continent, who are not included in the diet of aphids and mites. Protect the Lagoon with insecticides.
Powdery mildew and black mold, the Kordes climbing rose resists better than many other varieties. But sometimes these diseases develop on the Laguna. The methods of dealing with them are the same as for other plants.
Curly rose Laguna in landscape design
Climbing roses are used in landscape design to decorate homes and create flower arches or trellis hedges. Many flowers of this variety allow you to create beautiful compositions. Often, curly species are used to decorate and shade garden arbors.
Conclusion
Rose Climbing Lagoon will decorate the garden even for an inexperienced grower. Unpretentiousness allows her to “forgive” the mistakes of a novice gardener.
