History of breeding

The French nursery “Meiland” became the birthplace of the most famous variety “Gloria Dei” (Gloria Dei). The gardener Joseph Rambeau, who had a special love for roses, gave rise to a business that became a life’s work. He was continued by his daughter, son-in-law and grandson Francis. It was he who in 1935 grew 50 hybrids from seeds brought from the United States. Considering the newly blossomed flowers, the young breeder noticed a pink-yellow specimen. On the seedling, two out of three buds died. From the third came the famous Gloria Day.

During this period, the plant did not yet have the status and registered name, but it was very popular, it was sent from the nursery to many countries on the orders of breeders and gardeners. Established ties were broken by the war that began in 1939 and swept across Europe. Rosa in different states gave their names. At home, she was called “Madame Meyyan” (Mine A. Meilland), the Italians gave the name – “Delight” (Gioia), in Germany – “Glory to the Lord” (Gloria Dei), in the USA – “Peace” (Peace). In the USSR, the rose was delivered under the name “Gloria Day”.

She became a symbol of peace – she survived in a harsh time, flowers were presented at the UN assembly in 1945. The variety often received awards at competitions and exhibitions.

Advantages and disadvantages of hybrid tea rose Gloria Dei

Despite the apparent tenderness of the flowers, the rose has the following advantages:

  • it is resistant to a number of diseases and is affected by pathologies under extremely adverse weather conditions;
  • undemanding in care;
  • has frost resistance;
  • successfully propagated by cuttings or grafting on wild rose;
  • has a spectacular color and flower shape;
  • suitable for cutting;
  • has a strong bush.

The disadvantages of the rose “Gloria Day” are not so many:

  • flowers can fade in the sun;
  • after heavy rain, the buds sometimes do not open;
  • late start of flowering.

Methods of reproduction

For several decades, the Gloria Day variety has remained in demand among amateur gardeners. In order to propagate a rose, you should purchase a ready-made seedling, and after it has rooted and grown, use it as a mother plant. The most effective methods are cuttings and grafting.

Reproduction by cuttings

The method does not give 100% rooting, but with a favorable outcome, a native-rooted plant is obtained. To do this, they act according to the algorithm:

  1. In cloudy weather, parts of semi-lignified shoots of medium diameter are cut.
  2. The tops are cut off, and the stem is divided into parts 7-9 cm long.
  3. The upper cut on the handle is made at an angle of 90⁰ above the kidney, the lower one is oblique under the kidney.
  4. The leaves are shortened by half.
  5. The cuttings are placed in a solution of a root formation stimulator for 5 hours.
  6. They are planted in boxes with a moistened soil mixture of peat, sand and sod land at an angle of 45⁰.
  7. Cover with foil or plastic containers.
  8. A month later, the rooted cuttings are freed from shelter, the plants are grown and planted.

Roses are watered twice a week.

Reproduction by grafting

The method consists in using rose hips as a rootstock for the Gloria Day rose. Grafted by bud or cuttings. In the first case, the bark is cut in a T-shape and a scion is inserted under it, consisting of a rose bud and a piece of shield. After that, the stock is tightly wrapped with a film, leaving the kidney open. Within a month, it will become noticeable that the kidney is developing. After complete engraftment of the scion, the film is removed.

Important! Propagation by grafting requires a skill that can be acquired by using any crop as scion or rootstock.

Planting and caring for a rose Gloria Day

The plant needs a site that is well lit by the sun, ventilated, but without drafts and northern winds. A soil with a neutral reaction, air and moisture permeable, rich in organic matter is preferred.

Important! Planting of seedlings is carried out in May, after warming up the soil.

For the Gloria Day rose, spacious pits 50 cm deep and wide are prepared, placing them at a distance of 60-70 cm. Drainage is placed at the bottom, and humus is placed on top. The plant is installed in the center of the pit, its roots are straightened and covered with soil. After watering, the soil surface is mulched with peat, humus and foliage.

Watering the seedling is carried out with warm water strictly “under the root”. Twice a month, the soil near the plant is loosened, removing weeds. Top dressing is carried out several times – in the spring organic matter is brought under the bush, after flowering is over – mineral complexes.

Pruning roses “Gloria Day” for the purpose of rejuvenation is carried out in the fall, removing damaged and unripened shoots.

In preparation for winter, the bushes are covered with spruce branches, sawdust, boxes or non-woven material.

Important! The protection is removed from the Gloria Day rose in early spring, gradually removing all layers of cover so that the plant does not get burned.

Pests and diseases

The occurrence of diseases and damage to roses by insect pests is most often associated with poor lighting, adverse weather conditions, thickening of plantings and insufficient ventilation. Plants located nearby can become a source of infection.

Mučnistaâ rosa

The occurrence of a fungal disease is signaled by the appearance of a white coating on the leaves, which eventually becomes brown. The rose stops developing, does not form buds, and later parts of the plant turn black and die.

To combat parasitic fungi, fungicides are used, and the affected parts of the plant are cut out and disposed of.

Black spot

Pathology is characterized by the appearance of round black spots on the upper part of the leaves and on the shoots. After some time, spores form in their place, the leaves turn yellow and fall off. Rose “Gloria Day” loses its decorative effect, the bushes are completely bare. In the fight against black spot, copper sulfate preparations are used and plants are supported with immunostimulants.

Rust

On heavy and wet soils, roses often suffer from rust. At the beginning of summer, red spots appear on the reverse side of the leaf plates, gradually turning black. The shoots darken, bend, the Gloria Day rose stops developing, stops blooming. To combat rust, preparations containing copper are used, and the affected foliage is collected and burned.

vermin

Pests can cause irreparable damage to the plant. The most common among them:

  • spider mite;
  • rose aphid;
  • leaflet;
  • shield;
  • drooling pennitsa;
  • bear.

The use of insecticides and manual collection of insects are the main options for controlling them.

Important! Chemical treatments should be carried out three times with a break of 4-5 days.

Reviews of hybrid tea rose Gloria Day Climing

Many gardeners note the unique characteristics and versatility of the Gloria Day Climing rose in their reviews, descriptions and photos.

Moskalenko Nina, 75 years old, Kozelsk
Bought three Gloria Day roses two years ago. One of them did not start, the other two turned out to be not bushy, but climbing. I was even delighted with this circumstance, especially since it turned out to be easy to create a support for the plants, and the landing site was chosen well. The bush looks simply gorgeous – the flowering is so plentiful that the support is not visible. And although it starts very late, it continues until mid-September.

Orekhova Svetlana, 54, Tula
I ordered rose seedlings “Gloria Day Climing” in a specialized online store. Got them in the fall and planted them right away. Unfortunately, one specimen did not survive the winter – the frosts were severe, and the snow did not fall. In summer, the second seedling bloomed, long shoots grew. The flowers are very beautiful, delicate, large. For the first year, the support was not needed, and for the second year they built an arch on which the rose looks great.
