Clemastinum Hasco in syrup is a prescription antiallergic drug. The active substance used in the product is clemastine. The purpose of this medical device is mainly to alleviate the symptoms of skin allergies, Quincke’s edema and allergic rhinitis. In addition to the syrup, Clemastinum Hasco also comes in the form of tablets. How is the medicine used and when can it cause side effects?

Clemastinum – types of drug

The antiallergic drug Clemastinum is based on action clemastine, an active substance that inhibits the secretion of histamine. Medicinal products containing clemastine are administered to patients to relieve allergic symptoms, including skin allergies and allergic inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Several different products can be found under the commonly used name Clemastinum:

  1. syrop Clemastinum Hasco (1 mg/10 ml);
  2. tabletki Clemastinum Hasco (1 mg);
  3. syrop Clemastinum Aflofarm (0,5 mg/5 ml);
  4. syrop Clemastinum WZF (1 mg/10 ml);
  5. Clemastinum WZF tablets (1 mg);
  6. solution for injection Clemastinum WZF (1 mg / ml).

Clemastinum Hasco – prescription syrup

Clemastinum Hasco syrup is a medicinal product containing 1 mg of clemastine in 10 ml of liquid. Due to its antihistamine effect, it is administered in the case of allergic reactions, and is issued on a prescription. The syrup is colorless, transparent or slightly opalescent, with a strawberry flavor. The product can be used by adults and children over 1 year of age.

In the case of inhalation allergy, it is advisable to perform a blood test (e.g. blood taken at home) before using any medication. Thanks to this, it is possible to check the effect of allergens on the body.

Clemastinum Hasco syrup – indications for use

Clemastinum Hasco in the form of a syrup is designed to alleviate the symptoms of allergy. The main indications for the use of syrup are:

  1. skin allergy – itching, hives, contact dermatitis;
  2. symptoms of angioedema on your skin, also known as Quincke’s edema
  3. speech rhinitis allergic – sneezing, lacrimation, runny nose.

Clemastinum Hasco syrup – contraindications

According to the information contained in the leaflet, Clemastinum Hasco syrup should not be used in the case of:

  1. until the age of 1;
  2. breastfeeding women; in the case of pregnant women, taking the drug is not recommended, it may be recommended by a doctor only when treatment is necessary;
  3. allergy to clemastine or any of the excipients of the drug;
  4. allergy to chemically related compounds to clemastatin, including chlorpheniramine or diphenhydramine;
  5. taking MAO inhibitors, i.e. drugs belonging to the group of monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Clemastinum Hasco syrup – precautions

You can start using Clemastinum Hasco syrup after consulting your pharmacist, doctor and nurse. Certain conditions, including those affecting the patient in the past, may increase the risk associated with the use of the drug.

Clemastinum should not be combined with alcohol.

The recommendation to be especially careful when taking the drug applies especially to patients who were or are concerned with:

  1. bronchial asthma;
  2. arterial hypertension and cardiovascular disease;
  3. hyperthyroidism;
  4. bladder neck obstruction;
  5. porphyria – the drug may aggravate the symptoms accompanying this disease;
  6. prostate hyperplasia;
  7. peptic ulcers that impede the passage of food;
  8. stenosis of the pylorus;
  9. narrow-angle glaucoma or increased intraocular pressure;
  10. the elderly also have a higher risk of side effects – they may experience hypotension, dizziness or sedation.

In the case of scheduled allergy tests, the use of Clemastinum syrup should be discontinued at least three days in advance.

Clemastinum Hasco syrup – composition

The main medicinal component of the syrup is clemastine, while the other ingredients are auxiliary substances:

  1. liquid maltitol;
  2. propylene glycol;
  3. Purified Water;
  4. strawberry flavor;
  5. methyl parahydroxybenzoate;
  6. parahydroxybenzoesan propylu;
  7. dipotassium phosphate;
  8. sodium saccharin dihydrate;
  9. sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate.

Clemastinum Hasco syrup – dosage

Taking Clemastinum Hasco in syrup should take place according to the doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions. In children, the appropriate dose is selected according to age. A measuring cup is designed to measure a portion of the syrup, which allows you to prepare a dose of 2,5 ml, 5 ml and 10 ml.

Recommended dosage of Clemastinum Hasco syrup:

  1. Adults and children over 12 years of age – 10 ml of syrup twice a day (morning and evening);
  2. Children 6-12 years old – 5-10 ml of syrup twice a day (morning and evening);
  3. Children 3–6 years old – 5 ml of syrup twice a day (morning and evening);
  4. Children 1-3 years old – 2,5-5 ml of syrup twice a day (morning and evening).
  5. The medicinal product should not be administered to children in the first year of life.

The maximum allowable dose of the syrup per day for an adult is 60 ml.

Overdose of Clemastinum Hasco syrup

Do not take more than the recommended dose of the drug, as this may result in an overdose and the occurrence of side effects. If too much syrup is ingested, it is advisable to consult a doctor or pharmacist. In the event of overdose in children, the following are most often observed:

  1. stimulation;
  2. coordination disorders;
  3. muscle tremors;
  4. hallucinations;
  5. seizures;
  6. high fever;
  7. change of skin color to blue, as well as transition from excessive reactivity to a state of worsening apathy.

Other symptoms that may accompany an overdose of Clemastinum Hasco are flushing, dilated pupils, and dry mouth. In adults, drowsiness or coma may be more common. Both adults and children are at risk of coma and cardiovascular collapse.

According to the Clemastinum Hasco syrup leaflet, in the event of an overdose, induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal to the patient, and reduce the fever with cold compresses. Only symptomatic treatment is possible, there is no effective antidote in the event of taking too much clemastine.

Using Clemastinum Hasco with other drugs

The active substance of the preparation, i.e. clemastine, may interact:

  1. with monoamine oxidase inhibitors – these are drugs administered to patients treated for depression and may prolong or intensify the effect of clemastine;
  2. with anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics, some psychotropic and other drugs that inhibit the central nervous system – drugs from these groups enhance the effect of Clemastinum on the CNS;
  3. with anticholinergics – clemastine may intensify their effect.

Clemastinum Hasco syrup – side effects

Treatment with Clemastinum Hasco syrup may be associated with the occurrence of side effects, but not all patients may experience them. The drug may cause symptoms of:

  1. nervous system – drowsiness, dizziness and headache, problems with motor coordination, less often anxiety, insomnia, agitation, tremors, convulsions, tinnitus, visual disturbances;
  2. heart and vessels – incl. faster heart rate, palpitations, hypotension;
  3. blood and lymphatic system – altered number of blood counts, e.g. decreased number of thrombocytes, leukocytes and granulocytes, haemolytic anemia;
  4. digestive system (stomach and intestines) – nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation;
  5. respiratory system and chest – the secretion in the respiratory tract may thicken, and the mucosa of the nose, throat and mouth may dry out, or chest tightness;
  6. skin – itching, rash, hives;
  7. urinary tract and kidneys – problems with soaking, even stopping it;
  8. are also possible general symptoms, including chills, increased sensitivity to light, and sweating.
