Types of cleansing masks
A cleansing face mask helps to achieve a quick result – it absorbs the remaining sebum and impurities from the surface of the skin, cleanses and tightens pores. There are several types of cleansing masks: cream, gel, oxygen, tissue, mineral, film masks, exfoliant masks and alginate masks.
Depending on the composition, the product has additional caring properties, for example, reduces skin oiliness, soothes, moisturizes, tones, softens, restores the skin, strengthens the protective barrier.
The effectiveness of cleansing masks and indications for use
How to use a cleansing mask correctly? In what cases should the product be included in regular care and what results it will help to achieve at home – says dermatovenereologist Alexander Prokofiev, medical expert of the La Roche-Posay brand.
- Intense pore cleansing & blackhead reduction
If you have visible imperfections – black dots, comedones, oily sheen of the face – the action of the mask should be aimed at splitting sebum, cleansing the epidermis from the stratum corneum and accelerating cell renewal. As part of the mask formulas, you can pay attention to AHA and BHA acids, which gently cleanse the epidermis, and sebum-absorbing components, such as mineral clay.
- Pore reduction and mattification The degree of enlargement of the pores on the face directly depends on the activity of the sebaceous glands. Cleansing masks will help reduce oily skin, tighten pores and mattify the face for a long time. Perfectly cope with the task, for example, clay masks and formulas with natural absorbents.
- Alignment of tone and microrelief of the face Peeling masks with acids and enzymes have a pronounced exfoliating effect, “dissolve” the keratinized layer of the epidermis, start the processes of skin cell renewal, reduce post-acne marks and the first signs of aging – pigmentation and mimic wrinkles. With regular use, the complexion becomes radiant, the microrelief is visibly smoothed.
- humidification Oily problematic skin type needs active moisturizing no less than intensive cleansing. mattifying formulas can dry out the skin, cause flaking and increased sebum production. A vicious circle starts – sebum mixes with dead cells and clogs the pores, creating a sebaceous plug. Moisturizing components, for example, some plant extracts, hyaluronic acid, thermal water in the composition will help prevent dehydration of the skin.
How to choose a cleansing mask
Home corrective care should be tailored to the type and needs of the skin. To choose the right mask, carefully study what type of skin this product is intended for and what ingredients of the cleanser are indicated on the package label.
What should be the composition of cleansing masks
For oily and problem skin
What active ingredients should be included in cleansing masks for oily skin? Acne-prone skin is characterized by tightness, enlarged pores, a characteristic luster of the face and the presence of imperfections. Care should be aimed at regulating oily sheen, intensive exfoliation and moisturizing. For example, look for the following components in formulas:
- zinc;
- retinol;
- plant extracts;
- thermal water;
- hydrofixer;
- absorbent and detoxifying components (mineral clay kaolin, bentonite, charcoal);
- tea tree extract;
- acids (salicylic, lipohydroxy acid);
- soothing ingredients.
Important(!): Choose non-comedogenic formulas. It is recommended to look for a special mark on the packaging of products, for example, “non-comedogenic”. Avoid foods that dry out the epidermis and make the sebaceous glands work harder.
For dry and sensitive skin
Hypersensitive skin may react with an allergy to the active formulas of exfoliating masks with AHA and BHA acids and harsh abrasive particles that intensely act on the epidermis.
Important(!): Choose gentle hypoallergenic formulas with moisturizing and soothing ingredients, such as lipids, which restore the hydrolipidic mantle and strengthen the protective functions of the skin, reducing its sensitivity.

Consumer feedback:
- Sofa Shabsina: I liked the mask, it cleanses the skin of sebum well, the pores after application are clean, freshness is preserved for a long time and there is no oily sheen. After application, the skin does not tighten, the sensations are comfortable.
- Lilia Zaripova: I have combination skin with enlarged pores. The mask is excellent. Pleasant texture, comfortable application, economical consumption. The skin after applying the mask is visibly brighter. I’ve been using it for over 2 months and I’m seeing results.
- Ekaterina Pavlova: The mask shows a good result: it narrows the pores, controls the fat content of the face and does not dry the skin. I use it once a week, after washing and scrub, then apply cream.
- Evgenia Rastegaeva: I have sensitive combination skin. I use the mask as the next step after the La Roche soft scrub. The skin is moisturized, does not tighten, does not peel off, shines, but does not shine as before in the T-zone – the matting effect is obvious!
Homemade cleansing masks versus store-bought ones, what to choose?
There are a thousand and one recipes for homemade masks, but how effective are home remedies? Cleansing face masks prepared on the basis of natural ingredients from a pharmacy or store, for example, active mummy, clay, coffee grounds, egg white, can really have skin-friendly properties and can superficially clean pores. However, the reaction of the epidermis to such ingredients can be unpredictable and manifest itself as allergies, irritation, redness and dryness.
When choosing skin care products, look for proven cosmetic products with hypoallergenic formulas, tested under dermatological control and with visible effectiveness. The composition of cosmetics is important to select according to the type and condition of the skin. To achieve a visible result, cosmetic formulas must contain active ingredients in an effective concentration.
