Cleaning can be dangerous? It turns out that it is. Especially when we mix different cleaning products together. An example is the story of a Łódź resident who added vinegar to a popular detergent. The result was severe poisoning and a stay in toxicology. Which products must not be mixed with each other? Remember!
- Toilet fluid and vinegar are a poisonous combination. Not only is their direct connection dangerous, but even their use one after another
- The rule is, however, more general. Sylwia Panek, chemist: never mix ready-made cleaners and do not add NOTHING to them to strengthen them!

She poisoned herself cleaning the bathroom
The better is the enemy of the good. One resident of Łódź found out about it. The accident she suffered while cleaning the bathroom was described in August by Express Ilustrowany. To enhance the effectiveness of the popular cleanser, the woman added vinegar to it. The mixing of sodium hypochlorite (a substance used in disinfection) and acid resulted in the release of chlorine. “The woman inhaled poisonous gas and, due to breathlessness, came into toxicology,” the newspaper wrote.

Let’s remind that chlorine is irritating to the respiratory system and mucous membranes. Symptoms of poisoning may include burning, redness and swelling of the eyelids, mucosa, mouth and respiratory tract. As a consequence, there may be coughing, dyspnoea, cyanosis, and even pulmonary edema.
Chlorine poisoning can even be fatal. The most common cause of death is the aforementioned pulmonary or glottis edema, later paralysis of the respiratory system or circulatory failure.

Toilet fluid and vinegar are a poisonous combination
“You must not mix different surface washing and cleaning agents,” the Illustrated Toxicologist warned on the Express. Sylwia Panek, a chemist, author of the e-books “Zdrowy dom – Cleaning” and “#SobotSprzatanie”, also referred to the woman’s accident. «Don’t play chemists. If you do not know the composition and do not know what reactions are taking place, you can hurt yourself »- she appealed on Instagram.
What substances must not be mixed with each other? Certainly one of them is the aforementioned toilet fluid and vinegar. «Remember, this is a poisonous combination» warns the chemist. Not only is their direct connection dangerous, but even their use one after another.
«Never put them together. Also, never use them one by one, especially if you are dealing with a clogged toilet »- she warns.
The rule is, however, more general. “Also, never mix ready-made cleaners with each other and do not add NOTHING to them to strengthen them!” – reminds mama.chemist.
Coming back to chlorine at the end, remember that it is dangerous not only to inhale this substance, but also burns or drinking a substance containing chlorine (it causes irritation of the mucosa, wounds in the mouth, bloody vomiting). Meanwhile, you will find this compound in cleaning agents, disinfectants, and bleaches.
