It usually arises from an indirect injury as a result of a fall on an outstretched arm or shoulder. There is pain and swelling at the fracture site, difficulty lifting the limb. The fracture most often occurs where the collarbone is bent forward.

Rarely, it may be accompanied by damage to the brachial plexus and subclavian artery. Post-accident management is good immobilization, preventing the fragments from displacing and relieving pain at the fracture site. It consists in suspending the limb in a sling or tying the limb bent at the elbow to the body.

Treatment

First of all, conservative treatment is used: figure-eight dressing (backpack) maintained for 4-5 weeks.
