Citrus, the perfect fruit?

Cyrus is a very healthy fruit, it is quite a good source of vitamin C, it improves digestion and the functioning of the circulatory system, has an alkalizing effect and strengthens the body. It is difficult to list all their advantages, and we are constantly learning about new properties. It turns out that their smell may also play a key role. Essential oils can inhibit the growth of various cancer cells, including liver cancer.

We have written about citrus many times, e.g. in the article by Joanna Rymarczyk answering the question: Why is it worth eating citrus?

Citrus, in addition to being a valuable component of our diet, also has a number of other uses. The aromatic oils obtained from them are used to flavor food products.

Essential oils, our secret weapon

Essential oils are found in many plants. They perform in them, among others. protective functions, thanks to the antibacterial, antiviral and fungicidal properties. Recent studies have shown that terpenes, as the most important components of essential oils, can inhibit the growth of various cancer cells. Scientists scrupulously analyzed this process in the case of liver cancer. It turns out that under the influence of some terpenes, cancer cells stop growing! The olfactory receptors, which can serve as targets for the diagnosis and therapy of this type of cancer, are crucial in this process.

Terpenes can trigger specific processes in cells by activating olfactory receptors. Interestingly, these receptors are mainly found in the nose, but have been shown to be present in all types of human tissue, such as skin, prostate and sperm.

Scientists from the Ruhr University in Bochum tested the effects of terpenes in various concentrations and monitored their effects on liver cancer. It turned out that two out of eleven tested terpenes (citronellal and citronellol) caused a significant increase in calcium concentration in cells, which led to inhibition of cell growth. During further analyzes, scientists focused on the effects of citronellal. The results obtained offer hope for the development of new cancer drugs without serious side effects.
