Citalopram is an antidepressant medication called a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It is used in people who suffer from severe depression or panic disorder. Panic disorder may coexist with the symptoms of agoraphobia – the fear of leaving the house, the problem of finding yourself in the crowd.

Citalopram – indications for use

Depending on the type of preparation dose may change. It depends on the specialist physician in charge of the treatment. However, the maximum daily dose should not exceed 40 mg. Citalopram should not be weaned overnight as this can lead to so-called withdrawal symptoms. Citalopram dose should be reduced successively. Complete weaning citalopram should last up to two weeks.

Citalopram – contraindications to use

If the patient is allergic to citalopram or any of the excipients, should not take this medicine. Citalopram should not be used by people who suffer from heart disease and cardiovascular ailments.

Citalopram – interactions

If the patient is taking irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), do not use citalopram. If there is a need to receive citalopram, you should wait about 2 weeks after stopping the MAO inhibitor. If the situation works the other way around, i.e. the patient is to start treatment with an MAO inhibitor, and heal himself citalopramem, you should wait 7 days from the end of the treatment citalopramem. It should also not be taken citalopram with linezolid and primozide.

Citalopram – side effects

The most common side effects when applying citalopram These are: excessive sleepiness, insomnia, waking up at night, nightmares, visual disturbances, heart problems: palpitations, arrhythmias, low blood pressure or high blood pressure. Side effects citalopram may also include gastrointestinal discomfort: constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and flatulence.
