Ciprofloxacin (ciprofloxacin) is a component of the antibiotic of the same name which is bactericidal. It is usually used in cases of urinary tract infections. Ciprofloxacin can also be found in other drugs. We check how it works and what are the main indications for taking ciprofloxacin.

Ciprofloxacin – what is it?

Ciprofloxacin is a compound from the group of second-generation fluorinated quinolones, which primarily exhibit bactericidal activity. They disrupt the DNA of bacteria by inhibiting its synthesis. Ciprofloxacin is the most powerful drug in the fluoroquinol group. It kills all bacteria, but does not act on human enzymes. Drug with ciprofloxacin starts working when it reaches the maximum concentration that is safe for the patient. In some cases, drug resistance may occur due to a gene mutation.

Ciprofloxacin – indications

The main indication for admission antibiotics with ciprofloxacin there are all kinds of infections of the urinary tract and respiratory tract. Drugs can be taken by adults diagnosed with:

  1. urinary tract infection;
  2. lower respiratory tract infection (especially pneumonia, bronchopneumonia in cystic fibrosis and obstructive pneumonia);
  3. chronic purulent otitis;
  4. gonorrhea;
  5. travelers’ diarrhea;
  6. bone and joint infections;
  7. pulmonary form of anthrax;
  8. testicular inflammation and epididymitis;
  9. malignant inflammation of the inner ear;
  10. inflammation of the skin and soft tissues.

Children and adolescents should not take ciprofloxacin. However, there are special cases, which include, in particular:

  1. broncho-pulmonary infection in the course of cystic fibrosis;
  2. pulmonary form of anthrax;
  3. pyelonephritis and complicated inflammation of the urinary system.

Ciprofloxacin – the form of the drug

Ciprofloxycin is given to patients in the form of tablets that may be 250 or 500 mg. Adults take doses ranging from 100 to 750 mg per day, depending on the doctor’s recommendations. The same is true for children who are prescribed the appropriate dose by the doctor. The drug can also be administered intravenously. In addition, ciprofloxacin can be found in Cetraxal, Ciloxan, Ciphina, Ciprinol, Cipronex, Proxacin and Cipropol.

Ciprofloxacin – contraindications

The main contraindication to taking ciprofloxacin is the patient’s age. This is especially important for children between 5 and 17 years of age. In addition, the antibiotic must not be taken together with Tizanidine, which causes muscle relaxation. The use of the drug should be consulted with a doctor.

Ciprofloxacin – side effects

Side effects may occur when taking ciprofloflycin. Nausea, vomiting and anorexia are the most common. Light-headedness, headaches, convulsions and hallucinations also appear. Less common is hives or photosensitivity. Achilles tendon rupture or rupture may also be one of the effects of ciprofloxicin.
