Chronic bronchitis and emphysema (COPD) – Our doctor’s opinion
As part of its quality approach, Passeportsanté.net invites you to discover the opinion of a health professional. Dr Dominic Larose, emergency physician, gives you his opinion on the chronic bronchitis and emphysema :
COPD is extremely insidious. Symptoms appear so gradually that people with the disease often do not see the disease coming until it is very advanced. While bronchodilators – pumps – provide some respite, the only “treatment” that is proven to change the course of the disease is to quit smoking. In the event of an acute exacerbation, the occasional use of antibiotics and cortisone has also been shown to be effective. Respiratory rehabilitation can go a long way in relieving the feeling of shortness of breath, and should not be overlooked.
