In toddlers, the lens, which is supposed to act as a barrier against solar rays, is still very transparent. Thus, before 12 years, 60% of UVA and 25% of UVB reach the retina! Hence the importance of making him wear glasses in summer!
A resistant and soft material
The model must be unbreakable so that the child does not injure himself if he falls. It’sinterest in plastic at an age when the toddler moves his head, bends over, and may be tempted to abruptly take off his glasses to which he is not yet used. Without a hinge, it can handle them without the risk of breaking a branch.
UVA and UVB protection
The quality of the glass is important. To protect his eyes are fragile from UVA and UVB rays, the protection index must be category 3, even 4 (this is the maximum) whether you go to the mountains or by boat. Some models also filter out blue light. It’s even better! On the safety side, the CE standard guarantees the reliability of the glasses.
An enveloping and reversible frame
At birth, babies have a flat nose with a large width separating the two eyes. Hence the need to choose a very ergonomic and enveloping model. It should cover the eyebrows and not let the sun’s rays pass to the sides. We prefer a super-light model so as not to weigh on the nose. And reversible: without top and bottom, the glasses are quick to adjust on the face because you don’t have to wonder which way to put the glasses on your nose! .
An elastic for good support
Ideal for the first few months: an elastic band instead of branches so as not to disturb the infant whose head rests on the back of the stroller. THEl must be adjustable to suit all head sizes. For the older ones who sit up, we prefer short branches, held behind the head by a flat elastic (which does not get tangled in the hair).
Mom’s Tips
Caroline, mother of Jeanne, 3 years old.
“While she was a very baby, she wore them without any problem, around 8 months, Jeanne no longer accepted her glasses. So, I put mine on, and I said to her: “Look, what if you did like mom? And it worked”
Camille, mother of Jean, 19 months old.
“Last summer Jean absolutely did not want to keep the glasses that I had bought almost from birth on his nose! And right now, he keeps taking mine. Suddenly, I leave them to him, it protects his eyes well, and I put his … so that he wants to take them from me! “
