The easiest way is to purchase a fashionable collar, especially since now in stores there is a large selection of models – from very inexpensive to exclusive ones. For example, the Italian fashion house Trussardi has been making unusual collars and clothes for dogs for several years.
But it is important not to forget that, first of all, a collar is a functional thing, therefore, first of all, it should be useful to your pet, and only then be a stylish accessory! In addition, modern collars often have a set of additional functions that can make life easier for both the owner and four-legged friends.

There are a great variety of collars on the market: for different breeds, types of training, types of activity. The most important rule is to choose the right length so that the collar does not press on the neck and does not dangle. To do this, add a few centimeters to the length of the pet’s neck circumference (it must first be measured with a centimeter tape): 5-7 cm – for dogs, 2-4 cm – for cats. Ideally, two fingers of an adult’s hand should fit freely between the pet’s neck and collar.
The collar is chosen taking into account many factors: size, temperament, coat type and even the age of the pet. For example, experienced dog breeders have several collars for different situations: everyday, show, training, “out” and home.
It is important to remember that any collar (especially one in which a dog or cat goes for a walk every day) requires care: it must be cleaned of dirt in a timely manner, and removed after a walk so that the fur does not break or wipe off, and the skin breathes.
Large breed dogs with a calm disposition, such as St. Bernards, Great Danes or Newfoundlands, can use wide collars made of several leather layers with a European design. In it, the buckle is at the bottom, and the leash ring is in the middle. This prevents unnecessary twisting of the collar around the dog’s neck and hair pulling out. Another important element is the ring for which the leash is attached: it must be cast and securely attached to the collar. After all, even the calmest dog can get nervous or scared of something while walking. In addition, a tightly welded ring will minimize the risk of the dog falling off the leash.
For dogs of small and medium breeds, you can choose narrower collars – they will not pass the neck, and the pet will feel free, because you can safely turn your head in different directions.
For greyhounds and other dogs with a delicate neck, there is a special type of collar – the greyhound. On the throat side of such a collar there is an expansion that softens the pressure on the dog’s throat.
Long-haired dogs (for example, Afghan hounds, collies, etc.) are suitable for round collars in the form of a rope. Only when choosing such an accessory, make sure that the seam is located outside or on the side, so as not to chafe the dog’s neck.
When choosing a collar for cats, the same rules apply: comfortable adjustable attachments, a strong ring for a leash or harness, soft trim on the inside, but durable material on the outside. In this way, your cat will feel very comfortable!
Collar as a fashion accessory
Modern trendsetters have come up with fashion accessories not only for themselves, but also for their pets! Of course, they serve more for beauty and are often richly decorated with Swarovski crystals, rivets, beads, bows, or made of unusual materials. The pet looks very elegant in them, but veterinarians warn that such collars are suitable only for small breeds of dogs, such as Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier and others, and even then with the proviso: you will still use a harness for a walk.
If you have a large and active dog that spends a lot of time outdoors, then it is better to use ordinary collars, since decorative elements can catch on tree branches, injure the dog, or dirt and rust can form under them, which is detrimental to the pet’s skin …
As well as before buying a regular collar, its fashionable companion should also be carefully examined: there should not be any sharp parts on the inside that could injure the animal.
