Chlorine is a chemically very active element, it has an oxidizing effect. It is widespread in nature. It occurs in the form of inorganic and organic compounds.
Elemental chlorine is a green-yellow gas, heavier than air, with a penetrating suffocating odor, strongly corrosive to the mucosa (when dissolved, it forms hydrochloric acid). The cause of mass poisoning may be industrial failures of pipes or tanks (cylinders). Individual poisoning occurs as a result of non-compliance with occupational health and safety regulations in laboratories. Free chlorine is released from chlorinated lime, which is used to disinfect wastewater and toilets.
Symptoms of poisoning
Burning, redness and swelling of the eyelids, mucosa, mouth and respiratory tract. As a consequence cough, shortness of breath, cyanosis, pulmonary edema. The most common cause of death is pulmonary or glottis edema, later paralysis of the respiratory system or circulatory failure.
First aid
Removal of the poisoned person from the contaminated atmosphere; securing basic life activities; oxygen administration; ensuring complete peace and warmth (also during transport); removal of contaminated clothing; washing the skin with soap and plenty of running water; rinsing the conjunctiva with running water.
