China has approved the COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use. It is the fifth native vaccine approved for use in mainland China. How does CHO Cell work?

The China-approved (emergency use) vaccine against COVID-19 was developed by the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMCAS) in collaboration with Anhui Zhifei Longcom Biopharmaceutical. The formulation CHO Cell is currently undergoing late phase clinical trials in China, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Pakistan and Ecuador.

The COVID-19 CHO Cell vaccine belongs to the group of protein subunit vaccines, similarly to the vaccine of the American concern Novavax. They do not contain whole viruses, only purified proteins that trigger an immune system response and the production of antibodies.

So far, four native vaccines have been approved for widespread use in mainland China, three of which have previously been approved for restricted use. As part of the emergency vaccination program that started in July 2020, they were administered to representatives of certain professional groups.

The IMCAS communication did not specify which social or professional groups are to receive CHO Cell as part of emergency vaccination.

Chinese authorities plan to vaccinate 40 percent. the country’s population before the end of July. About 65 million doses were administered to residents by Sunday, according to information from the state health commission.

According to the Chinese news agency CNS, in early March, CHO Cell was approved for emergency use by the Uzbek authorities.
