Chinese authorities have decided to shut down the 9-million-strong city of Changchun, the AFP news agency reports. They are responding to the rise in COVID-19 cases in this way. In March, 78 confirmed infections were detected there — the lockdown of the city is the result of China’s “zero covid” strategy.
The 9-millionth Changchun is located in Northeast China. It is the center of the automotive, electromechanical, chemical and metallurgical industries. The city also has a university, a polytechnic and a branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
“Zero covid”
In this way, the city authorities are trying to stop the outbreak of the next wave of the pandemic, which could lead to the greatest number of cases COVID-19 since two years. In addition, common tests will be carried out there, all administrative employees are to work from home, and many companies are also to suspend their activities.

Shops are also closed, with the exception of pharmacies and supermarkets. Schools will also close, and metro, taxis and buses will stop running. In Changchun, one person from each family can go out every two days to buy essentials. It is not known how long such a closed-loop operation will last.
Changchun is located in Jilin Province. There have been 526 cases of COVID-19 in China since the beginning of March, and 78 in Changchun alone. On Friday, March 11 alone, China confirmed 397 new cases of COVID-19.
