Summer is a great time. Holidays, vacations … But also very dangerous. In the summer, accidents with children always increase. Children get into traffic accidents, fall out of windows, drown … How to avoid tragedies associated with beach vacations, said our consultant Andrei Grankin, head of the water rescue team of the municipal budgetary institution “ChemSpas”.
9 main rules of behavior on the water
1. Choose for recreation only those bodies of water where it is officially allowed to swim. With the onset of the season, their bottom is cleaned of debris, lifeguards are on duty on the beaches.
2. Enter the water in the suits designed for this. Teenagers often swim in shorts and a T-shirt. Water is collected in pockets, clothes hinder movement and pull to the bottom. In an emergency, excess weight can become critical.
3. Wear sleeves for young children. If the swimmer loses consciousness, they will not allow the head to sink into the water and drown. The sleeves must be fully inflated and fit snugly on the arm. Please make sure they are age-appropriate before purchasing.
4. Tie long hair into a braid or tight bun. Loose curls can get into the nose or mouth, making it difficult to breathe.
5. When the air temperature is above 30 degrees, you must not rush into the water from a running start. This rule must be observed by both children and adults. The heart can not withstand the difference in temperature – air, body, upper and lower layers of water. Slowly go into shallow water, plunge headlong, without leaving your place, stand for five minutes and swim. Please note: it is better to refrain from long distances in the heat.
6. Do not swim or dive in unfamiliar places and where you have not been for a long time… Check the bottom first. Ponds with opaque water must be examined every time, especially if there is a current, it can bring snags. You cannot dive if kids are floundering near the shore.
7. Walk with your child into the water together. The kid is able to drown even at a depth of no more than 20-30 cm. It is not enough to observe from the shore.
8. Decided to take a boat ride – put a lifebuoy or rope on the bottom, put on life jackets for children. Constantly remind you that you cannot indulge in the water, pretend that you are drowning.
9. Teach the little ones the rule: tired – lie on your back and rest, cramped leg – pinch the skin several times. For adults, the same recommendation, but if a swimsuit or swimming trunks have jewelry with a pin, it is better to prick your leg.
– If the child begins to drown, shout to be heard from the shore. Don’t rely on yourself. Let others know what happened. It often happens that, having pulled out the child, the parents are in a state of shock and cannot provide first aid.
– If the drowning toddler is conscious, grab him by the shoulders and try to avoid trying to grab you. On the shore, take off your wet clothes and take the baby as far away from the water as possible, this will minimize psychological trauma. The child has lost consciousness – hold it under the chin with your hand so that your face is above the surface of the water. Once ashore, ask to call the doctors and start providing first aid.
– The pulse can be felt, but the child is not breathing – do artificial respiration. Roll a roller out of the clothes and place it under the neck, fix the head, placing your palms on the victim’s forehead and chin. You need to take 35 breaths per minute, if the baby is infants, 30 – younger, 20 – school. No pulse – alternate artificial respiration with chest compressions. Lay the baby on a firm surface and kneel next to it. For babies, press on the middle of the sternum with the index and middle fingers, for children under 8 – with the palm of one hand. For schoolchildren, place both palms, one on top of the other, on the lower third of the sternum. Take one breath for five clicks. If there are assistants, do artificial respiration and massage at the same time. After the baby is breathing again, continue resuscitation until the skin turns pink. Then wrap up and show the doctor.
1. During rest, the child can get sunstroke or heatstroke. Follow the rules to avoid it and learn to give first aid.
2. Do not go outside with your child from 12 to 15 o’clock, avoid increased physical exertion at this time.
3. Protect your head from direct sunlight, dress your baby in clothes made from natural materials of light colors.
4. Bring an adequate supply of water with you. Not only water is suitable, but also kvass, juice, tea. Make sure your child drinks regularly.
6. If the blow could not be avoided, take the baby to the shade, undress and lay so that the legs are above the head. If the condition is serious, call an ambulance.
7. Wipe the baby’s body with a cloth or sponge dampened with water. Please note that the water should not be ice cold, but cool. Apply a wet compress to your forehead.
8. You can dip your baby into a river or pond if the water temperature is not lower than 18 and not more than 20 degrees.
9. Build a kind of fan and fan the child with it to ensure the flow of air.
10. The most important thing is to let your baby drink as much warm water as possible in small sips.
