Child neurologist – what does he do?
A pediatric neurologist is a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases of the nervous system in children. So they are diseases of the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, neurological diseases, or diseases of the brain, spinal cord and nerves in children, infants and adolescents.
Child neurologist – diseases
A pediatric neurologist assesses not only the child’s brain development, but also various neuromuscular conditions, such as muscular dystrophy and injuries during childbirth. The diseases that a pediatric neurologist deals with include, among others, cerebral palsy, spinal-spinal hernias, behavioral and developmental disorders, various brain injuries, sciatica, epilepsy, and speech disorders. In addition, this doctor also deals with ADHD, autism and genetic diseases.
Children’s neurologist – indications for a visit
A visit to a pediatric neurologist is recommended for newborns with a threatened or multiple pregnancy. The visit is also recommended for women who have had various infections, including viral infections, during pregnancy or who were taking medications. If your delivery was completed by Caesarean section or was complicated, you may also need to see a pediatric neurologist. Parents of premature babies and children with low birth weight should also make an appointment.
In infants, parents should worry about body asymmetries or abnormalities in muscle tone, unnatural backward tension of the body, clenching of fists, and even colic and restless sleep.
The indication for a visit to a pediatric neurologist is the child’s lack of interest in the environment, and regardless of age, seizures, anxiety, development regression, memory impairment, fainting, etc.

Child neurologist – study
Consultation with a pediatric neurologist is usually recommended by a pediatrician. Before the visit, it is very important to have with you, above all, all medical records, all our records and observations regarding the child, pregnancy card, family history of neurological diseases and a list of medications taken by the child.
The pediatric neurologist examines the child’s head, posture, limbs and the way he walks. In addition, it checks the baby’s feeling and reflexes. During the examination, he or she will ask the child to perform simple exercises and specific movements.
Based on the examination result, the doctor recommends:
- specialist examinations, e.g. MRI;
- consultations, e.g. psychiatric;
- specific treatment.

A visit to a pediatric neurologist can be reimbursed, but we can also arrange a private appointment. The cost of the visit is about PLN 150. The average waiting time for an appointment under the National Health Fund is several months. You need a referral from your GP.
