A few days ago, we wrote about how doctors managed to save five-year-old Mikołaj, who had little chance of survival at the hospital of the Polish Mother’s Health Center in Łódź. About what PIMS may end up – the so-called Pocovid syndrome in children and the need to vaccinate them explained in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza, Dr. Michał Matyjaszczyk, family medicine specialist, head of the Department of Family Medicine, CZMP Institute in Łódź.
- Children may have COVID-19 mildly or asymptomatically, but are at risk of developing what is known as pocovid syndrome, which can affect almost all parts of the body
- Dr. Michał Matyjaszczyk from the hospital of the Polish Mother’s Health Center in Lodz, in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza, calls for the earliest possible initiation of vaccination among the youngest children
- Currently, children from 12 years of age can be vaccinated

Pocovid syndrome in children
After suffering from asymptomatic coronavirus, five-year-old Mikołaj had 99 percent. broken lungs. The boy did not even qualify for a respirator. His lungs were a “white spot” on the X-rays. Not only that, the meninges, conjunctiva and almost all internal organs of the body became inflamed.
Only then did the doctors say that the toddler had been infected with COVID-19 asymptomatically. He was saved by the ECMO device, which is a type of prosthesis that replaces the work of the lungs. By connecting to it, the child’s lungs began to regenerate. But it could have ended much worse. According to doctors, pocovid syndrome in children can mean damaged blood system, respiratory system, central nervous system, digestive system, blood clotting can also be disturbed.

PIMS. Serious complications after COVID-19 in children
Santa is an extreme example of complications from a seemingly mild coronavirus. However, the Lodz doctor in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza emphasizes that he is not the only one. There were several dozen small patients with pocovid syndrome in the CZMP hospital, and many of them were in poor condition.
– It is not true that children have COVID-19 lightly and without complications. It often happens anyway. But let’s not forget about this group who is so ill that they end up in the hospital. And about those who suffer from severe, life-threatening complications after a mild disease or asymptomatic COVID-19, like Mikołaj, Dr. Michał Matyjaszczyk told Gazeta Wyborcza. – I saw children fighting for each breath and patients on a respirator. I am scared – added.

Doctor: The fourth wave is spinning
The doctor also stated that, in his opinion, vaccination of children, even those from the age of 7, should have begun a long time ago. He is worried about the fact that only 28 percent. 12-19 year olds from Łódź applied for vaccination and that in general, vaccinations are going very slowly now, and there are fewer and fewer volunteers, also adults.

– I am worried about the failure of the vaccination program in schools and the low level of interest in the youngest. Please note that coronavirus infections have occurred in several dozen facilities in Łódź since September. And the fourth wave is rolling in. Probably in October the daily number of infections will reach 5 or even 7 thousand – predicts Dr. Michał Matyjaszczyk.
COVID-19 vaccines for children – at what stage are they?
Currently, adolescents 19+ can vaccinate against COVID-12. On September 20, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that the COVID-19 vaccine can be used in children 5-11 years of age. Both companies are trying to approve the preparation for children, including by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency.
The results of studies on the use of the COVID-19 vaccine in children 2-5 years of age and 6 months to 2 years of age are to be compiled by the end of this year. The Moderna concern is also currently conducting clinical trials of vaccination against COVID-19 in children.
- Poles are less and less afraid of the coronavirus. And they don’t want to get vaccinated
According to Dr. Matyjaszczyk vaccines are the only sensible way to fight the coronavirus. – Because we know its effects – deaths, severe complications in adults, which, despite the passage of months after recovery, still make themselves felt, and finally PIMS in children, which can be extremely dangerous, as in the case of our patient, Mikołaj. It is hard to believe that people can be so thoughtless as not to vaccinate themselves and deny vaccinations to their children, who love them more than life – says the doctor in an interview with “GW”.
