Childcare arrangements: the cost according to your income

For the poorest families, the crèche remains by far the cheapest childcare solution. Its cost is defined according to your family situation and your income. If you have recourse to the services of a licensed maternal assistant or a nanny, you can receive assistance from CAF according to these same criteria.

You receive less than € 2 in monthly income

  • The nursery will come back to you as much as possible (for 2000 €) at 160 € per month (based on a household with two children). It is your family resources as well as the number of children you have to support that make it possible to know your Financial participation for a place in a crèche. The calculation is possible thanks to a CAF scale, which sets your “effort rate” per hour on call. For example, if you earn € 2000 gross per month, you want to place your child 8 hours a day, 20 days a month and you have 2 dependent children, you will have to pay:  € 2000 X 0,05% = € 1 X 8 hours X 20 days = 160 € / month. (0,06% for 1 child, 0,04% for 3 children, 0,03% for 4 to 7 children). Make sure you find out whether it is a collective day nursery (public or private), a company or a parent.
  • If you entrust your child to an approved childminder, you will be able to benefit from the additional free choice of childcare of the PAJE paid by CAF. But 15% of the total remains your responsibility. This supplement varies from: € 176,82 / month (minimum for a child under 3) to € 467,41. If your income is less than or equal to € 20, you receive the maximum amount, to be deducted from the salary of your childminder. This is established according to: the number of hours of care desired, weeks in the year, the hourly rate thereof and the amount of daily allowances (and meals). CAF assistance is paid after payment of the salary.
  • Regarding shared home care, employee contributions must be added to their salary, deduct the aid from the CAF and the deduction from employer contributions. You will thus obtain the rest for the family. As of August 1, 2018, the legal minimum wage set by the scale is 10,21 € gross / hour.

You have between 2000 and 3000 € of income

  • For the nursery, you will have to pay between 160 € (base for two children) and 240 € per month.
  • For the employment of a maternal assistant or shared home childcare, you will receive € 294,73 as a supplement to the free choice of childcare. The rest depends on your employee’s salary. For home care (shared, always), the reference is the minimum wage and CAF aid which depends on your salary. Taxable families can deduct part of the costs incurred (a maximum of 7500€ tax credit).

Between 3 and 000 € per month

  • For childcare (on the basis of a home with two children and 20 days of care / month), depending on your income, you will pay between 240 and 320 €.
  • The supplement for free choice of childcare is € 294,73. The remainder of the charge will therefore be roughly the same for childminders and shared home care, as in the previous installment.

More than € 4 monthly

  • La crèche will cost you between 320 € and 800-1000 €.
  • For the use of a maternal assistant or a home care, the supplement for free choice of childcare will be € 176,82
