The moment the baby is born is getting closer, but questions remain. Which childbirth is better: paid or free? What is the difference between them? Where are the more guarantees that everything will go smoothly?

Obstetrician-gynecologist of the Clinical Hospital “Lapino”

“To begin with, I will debunk the most important myth: only the Lord God can give a XNUMX% guarantee about the health of mothers and babies, because it is impossible to predict the course of childbirth. At the same time, the desire of a woman to receive all the best at such a crucial moment is understandable, because the times when “they gave birth in the field before, and nothing” are long gone. Today, the process of having a child into the world can be painted almost according to the script. And in your own way, where there is a minimum of uncertainty and a maximum of convenience. “

Major alarms

Childbirth under compulsory medical insurance is carried out in state clinics, where it is also possible to conclude a contract and pay for additional services. Opponents of free childbirth, having read horror stories on the forums, are not ready to take risks, because:

  • an ambulance will take you to the nearest maternity hospital, and, perhaps, it will not be the new center in which you would like to give birth;

  • a woman will find herself in “unknown” territory, not knowing what, how and for what will happen, and unnecessary stress is not at all useful;

  • a team of doctors on duty will take delivery. Can you trust her?

We explain point by point. At first, any maternity hospital has all the necessary means of resuscitation for mom and baby, if something goes wrong.

Secondly, even in an unfamiliar place, the woman in labor will be explained everything in an accessible way and will tell what to do – all participants in the process are interested in this.

Thirdly, any doctor on duty, regardless of the status of the entered woman and the income of her husband, will perform his duties with high quality, and not only for duty. Indifferent doctors rarely stay in maternity hospitals, because negligence here is a direct path to criminal liability. Well, if you want to see a specialist next to you, who has been observed for all nine months, go to “your” maternity hospital – the doctor will take delivery, even if his change has not yet come.

What are we paying for?

Everyone wants the birth to take place safely and in the most comfortable environment. But everyone has their own ideas about comfort. Someone needs an individual room, and someone needs a VIP suite; one – six meals a day, and the other – mother’s cutlets for a couple.

In any case, one must understand that the range of paid services provided by state neonatal centers and maternity hospitals is not as extensive as in private clinics. Single rooms, an additional menu, a psychologist for mom and relatives, accompaniment of a breastfeeding instructor, an individual nurse’s post – perhaps that’s all.

Few people know, but partner childbirth is provided by the compulsory medical insurance program, so there is no need to pay for the presence of a husband at childbirth. However, so far due to the pandemic, this option is not available in budgetary institutions. In any case, whether you paid for additional services or not, the mother and child will not be sent home until they make sure that their health is not in danger.

Beyond fiction

The level of service of private clinics is aimed at satisfying the needs of the most demanding patients and fulfilling their most unexpected wishes. You can choose the type of childbirth: traditional, home, vertical, water birth, hypnorod, invite your doula, turn on your favorite music or light an aroma lamp.

For example, in the Lapino Clinical Hospital, a woman has a one-, two- or three-room individual ward with all the conveniences at her disposal. The interior is close to home furnishings. When the cherished hour strikes and the baby is born, mom can choose whether to leave him in her ward or in the children’s department under the supervision of neonatologists.

The cost of a standard contract is about 200 thousand rubles, a VIP-category contract is 1 175 000 rubles. It additionally includes physiotherapy for the patient and the newborn, an individual nurse’s post, the help of a midwife, other services and the same 3-room ward, in which a husband or other accompanying person may be.

In some women, the level of anxiety, including due to hormonal changes, literally rolls over. For them, the contract can really be a guarantee of confidence in a happy outcome. For the rest, we recommend weighing the pros and cons by answering the following questions:

  1. How important is household comfort to me?

  2. Will I be able to trust an unknown doctor?

  3. Are you ready to allocate a certain amount from the budget to pay for the contract?

In addition, you can go to the selected maternity hospital “on an excursion”, study reviews, watch broadcasts with doctors on social networks, chat with those who have everything behind them. Then it will be easier to make a decision and become a happy mother of a wonderful baby.

Stories from life

Third birth: by contract

“Third births – not every organism will say thanks for them, not everyone will survive. I talked throughout the pregnancy that I want to protect the baby and myself as much as possible during childbirth, so I see the point of giving birth for a fee.

Labor activity is weak in itself. Therefore, I am in favor of stimulation. I don’t take advice like “The baby knows when to be born …” In this matter, I trust only my doctor. And I’m not even going to rely on my intuition, it’s too risky.

Term – 40+ weeks. In the afternoon, the doctor looked and delivered a verdict: everything is ready for childbirth. But the body is silent. They let me go until the next morning. The next day, the picture changed, and I was left to give birth, because during the night Robert himself began to slowly move to the exit. No gel stimulation was needed. But due to very weak labor, the bladder was immediately punctured.

The contractions immediately intensified. It took me forty minutes. Then it got worse, it was impossible to endure, my head was spinning, it seemed that a little more, and I would lose consciousness. How so? With Paul everything was so cheerful and good. I can still walk and endure, but the doctors, looking at my green face, suggested pain relief. After the epidural, it became easier. The contractions were not felt at all. And so the doctors say: we will give birth. And in my head: “How? Already? Only four hours have passed. “

Soon Robert was born. Fortunately, he did not have to be dragged or pulled. The body coped with it, exhaled … And so did I. The uterus, which is supposed to contract, refused to contract. Heavy bleeding began. They tried to stop him for an hour, and I lost 1,5 liters of blood. I was urgently taken to the operating room. The placenta was removed by hand. This is very dangerous for the mother, there is a lot of blood loss, everything happens very quickly. But there was no transfusion.

What would you do in a regular maternity hospital? They cut it, like in a cesarean section, and that’s it. Here vascular surgeons performed uterine artery embolization for me. Through a mini-incision in the groin at the leg, a thin tube was inserted and the vessels bleeding in the uterus were sealed with special mini-granules and emboli. I saw on the monitor how the blood is absorbed, the vessels are reduced and restored. No seams! No consequences after! This will not affect my future life in any way. I felt better immediately. Now just lie in intensive care for XNUMX hours under supervision, and then everything is as usual: to get up slowly, move and get used to the role of a mother of three boys. “

Second cesarean: according to the policy

“The difference between my sons is three years. Honestly, when I went to the usual maternity hospital for Artyom, there were doubts. The memories of the experience with the first, Nikita, were still fresh. For nine months I did not know any problems – neither toxicosis, nor other complications. But what those births were like, I will not wish anyone. I arrived at my doctor at night when the waters had receded. They put me on a drip because the disclosure was insufficient. She lay down to the cocks, writhing in pain. They anesthetized me, of course, but the medicine was weak. At 8 am the doctor looked and said: “We urgently need to do a cesarean.” Imagine a child was stuck in a hollow and could not get out on his own, he was suffocating. The operation was done in a hurry, the seam was somehow concocted on half of the stomach and was sent home after 7 days. I will not talk about my experiences when I learned about my son’s health from the cleaning ladies: they didn’t let me see the baby, and the doctor didn’t pick up the phone. In general, I went through with it then.

This time I chose a different maternity hospital, but also an ordinary one. I agreed with the doctor in advance, and he was operated on. I came in two days, lay there chatting with the girls. The food, however, is not very good, but you will not die of hunger. I lived nearby, so I ran for a snack. I was surprised that in the entire department there was not a single pillow with artificial filler, and I am allergic to down. I had to bring it from home – on padding polyester. So I showed up in the operating room: with a bag of things, a pillow and a huge belly. Laughter!

Everything went great under the epidural. They showed me my mushroom right away, he was born large, like the first son. The seam was corrected, now it is not visible at all. And, thanks to the doctor, she didn’t let me go until the last – she didn’t like something in the ultrasound images. Now everything is fine, we are growing and enjoying every day! “
