Chestnut syrup: a recipe at home

Chestnut syrup has an original taste, which is radically different from classic berry-fruit syrups.

Important! You can’t make syrup from an ordinary chestnut, you need a special variety called Marroni, also known as an edible chestnut.

Syrup recipe + sweet chestnuts for cooking

For syrup, you can use pre-cooked canned chestnuts or vacuum sealed ones.

Ingredients

  1. Marroni chestnut – 1 cup

  2. Water – 1 glass

  3. Sugar – 1 glass

  4. Vanilla – 1 pod

  5. Orange peel – 1 tbsp. l.

  6. Brandy – 60 ml

Method of preparation

  1. Remove any cracked raw chestnuts, then rinse them.

  2. Cut through the chestnut shells using one of the methods as in the photo below …

  3. Preheat the oven to 220 degrees and move the baking sheet with the chestnuts into it.

  4. Bake for approximately 45 minutes.

  5. Then take the chestnuts out of the oven and let them cool down a bit. Remove shells and skins from chestnuts while they are still hot.

  6. If the paper skin sticks to the chestnut flesh, roll it between your palms until it splits.

  7. To make chestnut syrup, combine 1 cup water, sugar, grated vanilla bean and orange zest in a small saucepan.

  8. Bring the pot to a boil and reduce the heat. Cook until sugar dissolves, then remove from heat, let cool completely and strain.

  9. Place 1 cup of roasted chestnuts in a clean, airtight jar and pour the prepared syrup over the chestnuts. Add brandy and stir well.

  10. Close tightly and transfer to the refrigerator. Wait at least 5-7 days before using the syrup.

  11. After insisting, chestnuts can be eaten and used in cooking.
