Cherry variety Turgenevka: description
Cherry is an unpretentious variety that is widespread in central Russia. The tree, when properly planted and cared for, gives consistently high yields.
Description of the cherry variety “Turgenevka”
Turgenevka was bred in 1979 on the basis of the Zhukovskaya cherry variety. The height of the trees does not exceed 3,5 m, and the crown diameter is about 5 m. The leaves are oval, rather narrow, with jagged edges.
The fruits are large. They are characterized by the following indicators:
- weight 4-5 g;
- diameter – 2 cm;
- oval berries;
- the color is maroon;
- the pulp is juicy, sweet and sour.
The bone is easily separated from the pulp. In this case, the drupe makes up only 8-10% of the total mass of the berry.
From an adult tree, you can harvest up to 25 kg. The first berries are obtained in the 5th year after planting. The fruit is easily separated from the stalk, so harvesting is easy. After ripening, the fruits do not fall off for a long time.
With proper care, the tree will bear fruit for 20-25 years. Cherries bloom in May, and in July you can already pick berries.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the “Turgenevka” cherry variety
The variety has several advantages over other varieties of cherries:
- it is quite resistant to low temperatures;
- generally not susceptible to fungal diseases;
- characterized by high productivity;
- has large sweet fruits.
Moreover, the tree does not require special care.
The main disadvantage is that flowering soils cannot withstand severe frosts and sudden changes in temperature. Cherry also does not tolerate drought well. That is why, in hot summers, provide the trees with sufficient watering.
The tree is self-fertile, but its self-pollination is low. Therefore, it is better to plant “Turgenevka” with other pollinating varieties.
Planting and caring for cherries
Keep in mind that when planting cherries, groundwater should be located at a depth of more than 1,5 m.
The distance between the trees should be about 2,5 m. The diameter and depth of the pit is about 60 cm. Add superphosphate, potassium chloride and wood ash to the planting pit.
Focus on the soil when planting. Its acidity should be neutral. Sandy loam soil is well suited for cultivation. When planting, add 200 g of lime to acidic soil, and a bucket of sand to clay soil.
Water the cherries regularly for the first year after planting. Fertilize with a mullein once a year and loosen the soil to a depth of 10 cm. In the spring, cut off the dry branches and form the crown of the tree.
When planting, take into account the characteristics of the variety in order to get a rich harvest.
