The variety got its name from the columnar shape of the crown. It is prized for its high yield and resistance to adverse conditions.
Description of the variety of columnar cherry plum
A medium-sized cherry plum tree has a rare dark green crown. Its height does not exceed 3 m, and the crown diameter is 1,5 m. Fruits ripen on flower boxes. The berries are large and heavy, ovoid. Their mass is about 15 g. The thin skin is colored red-purple. The pink flesh is firm and juicy. It has a pleasant sweet and sour taste. Cherry plum berries exude a delicate sweet aroma that fills the territory of the infield.
The cherry plum blossom period begins in June. The berries ripen much later. Harvested not earlier than August. Each tree can be harvested 30-50 kg of berries. They are consumed both fresh and canned. The dense skin allows the fruit to withstand transportation and preservation. The columnar variety is self-fertile, therefore it is recommended to grow cherry plum varieties next to it:
- “Kuban comet”;
- Cleopatra;
- “Traveler”;
- “Anastasia”;
- “General”.
Pollinators contribute to the formation of the ovary. It is not necessary to grow thorns and plums as pollinators.
Cherry plum columnar: cultivation
Cherry plum belongs to the southern plants. She is hygrophilous and prefers good lighting. When choosing a soil, you should pay attention to the moisture content and the absence of sand. Planting a seedling can be done in spring and autumn. A seedling for transplanting to a permanent place should be one year old.
Particular attention is paid to the condition of the crown and root system. They must be well developed and healthy. Seedlings with dead branches and root shoots are not suitable for planting
The depth and diameter of the planting pit is 60 cm.It is buried with soil with the addition of:
- Superphosphate;
- Potassium salt;
- Of humor.
After planting, the soil is watered intensively. The tree takes root well in any area. It’s easy to take care of him. The plant requires regular, moderate watering, feeding and pruning.

Pruning should be done in the spring to form new shoots, and in the fall to prepare for winter. You can shorten the branches by no more than 5 buds. Young plants can be fenced to withstand frost.
The advantages of the variety are high yield and ease of cultivation. The compact size allows you to plant trees in small areas. Disease, pest and weather resistance makes maintenance easy.
