Cherry plum: cherry plum variety

The Mara variety is a hybrid variety. Like all such varieties, it is resistant to climate change. This allows you to get a consistently high yield.

Cherry plum “Mara” refers to tall trees. Its crown is spreading and dense. The foliage is large, with a deep green hue. Even without trimming, the crown retains a uniform spherical shape. Young shoots are colored dark burgundy. On the trunk and branches, the bark is dense and has a brown tone. The main advantage of the variety is its high yield.

Cherry plum “Mara” brings crops several times per season

Cherry plum berries look like a large ball. Their weight can reach 25 g. Juicy pulp is reliably protected by a dense skin. The fruits are yellow in color. Each tree bears up to 40 kg of fruit. The berries ripen unevenly, so you can get the harvest several times. The first fruits are formed in early autumn. To form, it is necessary to plant pollinators next to the cherry plum:

  • Wild cherry plum;
  • Variety “Vitba”;
  • Variety “Red comet”;
  • Variety “General”.

Cherry plum is notable for its pleasant sweet taste and floral aroma. Thanks to the dense skin, the berries are resistant to mechanical damage. They tolerate transportation and preservation well. The fruit can be eaten fresh or used for making desserts. The harvest of the “Mara” variety has a long shelf life. The freshness of the fruit lasts about 3 weeks at room temperature.

A sunny area is suitable for planting a tree. The root system does not tolerate stagnant fluid, therefore good drainage must be installed. It is recommended to plant the plant on loamy or sandy loam soils. The Mara variety has advantages for which it is appreciated by gardeners:

  • Frost resistance – cherry plum tolerates winter well. With the onset of severe frosts, it is enough to protect it with a fence;
  • Long rest period – protects the kidneys during a sharp drop in temperature;
  • High early maturity – already 2 years after planting, the plant brings the first harvest, and after 6 years a high yield level is achieved;
  • Resistant to pests and fungi – avoids the use of chemicals.

Young seedlings are less resistant to cold weather. To protect their root system, the trunk circle must be mulched. The stem is covered with an anti-freeze material.

Even a novice gardener can grow cherry plum. The Mara variety has many advantages, but the only disadvantage is self-fertility.
