Cherry Ovstuzhenka: variety description
Cherry “Ovstuzhenka” is unpretentious in its care and will delight you with a perfect harvest at the beginning of summer. It has undeniable advantages and only a few disadvantages.
Description of cherry “Ovstuzhenka”
The tree reaches a height of 4 m. The leaves are large with a pointed tip. The fruits are round. The berry weighs 6 g, and the diameter is about 18 mm. The pulp is sweet. The color of the berry is maroon.
The drupe separates easily from the pulp. The stone makes up about 7% of the total mass of the berry.
Among the main advantages of this cherry are the following:
- high frost resistance of flowers;
- the average fruiting period is 40 years;
- yields up to 30 kg per tree;
- good transportation and storage of fruits;
- berries do not crack even in rainy weather.
At the same time, the trees themselves are not tall, which makes harvesting easier.
The main disadvantage is that this variety has an average resistance to fungal diseases of cherries. However, with regular preventive measures, they are practically not affected by monilliosis and coccomycosis.
The variety is semi-fertile. If you want to increase yields, you will have to take certain measures. For flowering of the ovary, this cherry is planted next to pollinators or artificially pollinated.
How to plant the Ovstuzhenka cherry variety and how to care for it?
Trees prefer the south side of the site. Fertile light soil is selected as the soil. Loamy and sandy ones are well suited, as they have good air permeability.
The planting pit should be about 1 m deep and in diameter. 3 buckets of manure or humus, superphosphate, potash fertilizer and wood ash are pre-poured into it. The distance between the seedlings should be at least 4 m. Around the planted tree a hole is formed with a rim ½ m in diameter. The seedling is watered abundantly, and the trunk space is mulched with earth or straw.
Choose a healthy seedling for planting with a well-developed root system without spots on the trunk. It should also have a large number of branches.
Cherries need abundant watering: for each tree 25 liters of water. Fertilizers are applied 2 times a year: in the spring, urea, and in the fall, horse manure. Cherries also need to be trimmed to form a crown.
In the spring, the tree is treated with copper sulfate and nitrophene to make the trees less susceptible to fungal diseases.
The variety is perfect for cultivation in the Central part of Russia. Therefore, try to grow it on your site.
