Recently Cherries are enjoying increasing interest in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation both in physically active people and with various clinical problems. It is believed that the fruit’s high anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities could become a natural alternative to over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Cherry juice can improve muscle function, inhibit exercise-induced inflammation, and reduce oxidative stress and pain. Such action is very important, especially if we are dealing with a long-term effort, such as a marathon.
Cherries are rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, and protect the circulatory system. They can bring relief from cramps, headaches and joint pains. They are a natural antiseptic.
Prolonged and strenuous exercise is often associated with signs of mucositis in the airways. Recent studies have shown that half or more than two-thirds of these complaints were caused by inflammation and / or allergies. Cherry juice is considered an ideal measure to reduce the negative effects of prolonged exercise. Cherries are rich in compounds such as anthocyanins and quercetin, which have properties anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Previous studies have shown that cherry juice concentrate reduces post-exercise inflammation as well as macrophage inflammatory proteins.
This year, an article was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition that proves that cherry juice can reduce upper respiratory symptoms in competitive athletes. During the study, 20 athletes received cherry juice or a placebo – before and after the run. Before and after the races, the level of immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G, cortisol in saliva, and inflammation (CRP) were checked, and the upper respiratory tract symptoms reported by the participants were also noted.
The analysis of the indicators showed that in the group that received cherry juice reduced the risk of mucositis in the respiratory tract. The results are promising and the research will certainly be continued.
If you exercise, especially on a recreational level, use natural juices, especially cherry juice, in your diet instead of ready-made products. Not only does it taste great, but it will also keep you healthy and energized.
