Moscow Art Theater Chekhov and Google announce the launch of the project «Chekhov is alive». The main event will be a 24-hour reading marathon based on Chekhov’s works, which will take place on 25 September. Everyone can try themselves as a reader. Casting has already begun.

Lopakhin, Ionych, Dr. Dorn, «the man in the case» Belikov — all these characters, created by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, will speak with the voices of five hundred people who will take part in a round-the-clock online marathon. Moscow Art Theater A.P. Chekhova and Elena Gremina, an expert on the writer’s work, selected 50 works for online readings — various stories and plays. Fans of the writer’s work from all over the world — from Moscow and Sakhalin to Harvard and Hong Kong — will be able to read them on September 25 at specially organized venues.

“With the help of Google and YouTube technologies, we will unite lovers of Russian literature around the world,” said Dmitry Kuznetsov, Google Russia Marketing Director. “The recording of the live broadcast of “Chekhov is alive” will be published on a special website, where you can not only listen to your favorite stories and plays again, but also virtually visit “Chekhov’s places” and, of course, find your favorite characters and readers.” Along with ordinary users, well-known actors, writers, musicians, athletes and politicians will take part in the project. Among them are Oleg Tabakov, Renata Litvinova, Konstantin Khabensky, Igor Vernik, Nikolai Chindyaikin, Maxim Matveev, Ilya Glinnikov and others.

The selection of marathon participants takes place on project site. Future readers will be asked to take a test and determine which of the selected 28 Chekhov characters best suits their character and temperament. The characters correspond to 15 types of character, among which are “sweet sinner”, “hooligan”, “evil boy”, “careerist”. Based on the results of the test, the system will offer to read an excerpt from the corresponding work and record it on video. To apply for the readings, you must submit an entry through the online form at g.co/chekhov. You can apply until August 10th inclusive.

Theatrical online readings «Chekhov is alive» are part of the official program of the Year of Literature in Russia and are dedicated to the 155th anniversary of the writer’s birth. Earlier, readings of Leo Tolstoy’s novel «Anna Karenina» were held in the format of a round-the-clock online marathon. Recordings of the best readings can be heard on the website karenina.withgoogle.com.
