Neck size matters? It turns out that it is. It can have a significant impact on the quality of our sleep and the ability to fall asleep. Taking a neck measurement allows you to determine your risk of developing a variety of sleep disorders, including snoring and sleep apnea. Why does it matter so much?
- The circumference of our neck can directly affect snoring and sleep apnea
- The size of the neck also increases the amount of fat in other parts of the body, including at the base of the tongue and in the airways
- Too much fat in this area can significantly hinder our ability to breathe freely
- A circumference of the neck greater than or equal to 43 cm for men and 40 cm for women is considered a risk factor for snoring and sleep apnea.

A large proportion of men know their neck size, as this measurement is used to buy collared shirts. Women also know the size of their partner’s collar, but are often unaware of the size of their own neck. Its too large circumference can significantly affect our health, as well as the quality of sleep.

Neck size – Effect on obstructive sleep apnea
We talk about apnea when a person has cyclical pauses in breathing lasting at least 10 seconds and causes hypoxia in the body. Obstructive sleep apnea is the cyclical pauses in breathing during sleep. Their main cause is the partial or complete closure of the throat lumen during sleep due to a decrease in muscle tone.
- Do you have a snoring problem? Anti-snap nose plug makes it easier to breathe during sleep. It reduces the resistance of air flowing through the nose, thus improving ventilation during exercise
Snoring is also an inherent element of apnea. The noise of the night occurs as a result of the reduction of muscle tension during sleep, including the throat and tongue. These muscles relax partially, and then the back of the throat drops down to touch the root of the tongue. At this point, there is only a small gap left for normal breathing.

There is a simple explanation as to why neck size may increase the risk of developing sleep apnea. The neck becomes wider as overweight or obesity progresses. Its size also likely corresponds to increased amounts of fat elsewhere in the body, including at the base of the tongue and in the airways. On the other hand, the crowding of adipose tissue in this area can significantly hinder our ability to breathe freely.

Neck size too large – what can be done?
The size of the neck can be measured with a paper or plastic tape measure. If you have difficulty breathing while sleeping, this measurement can be taken at your doctor’s office. For men, a neck circumference greater than or equal to 43 cm is considered a risk factor for snoring and sleep apnea. However, in the case of women, the circumference is greater than or equal to 40 cm.
If the neck size is too large, losing weight is the first step. In some cases, however, an evaluation by a plastic surgeon may be necessary. Its task is to assess whether a given patient needs to undergo treatments that can reduce the excessive amount of tissue, including stabilization or removal of fat or skin.
