Nowadays, dried eggs in the composition of food products are no surprise to anyone. And it shouldn’t. You have to go with the times, not lag behind technology. Maybe so, but only when we are 100% sure of the safety of such improvements.

As many as five people have been charged with the production and sale of powdered eggs that are harmful to humans. The product was manufactured without the supervision of veterinary and sanitary services and without maintaining sanitary standards in Greater Poland near Kalisz. The ingredients used for production were of poor quality. As the deputy district prosecutor in Ostrów Wielkopolski informed:
From 2008 to December 2011 in the Kalisz poviat, by running the enterprise, he has produced and marketed the products food labeled as bakery mix, egg powder and eggs in powder. Due to their bacteriological contamination, they accounted for products that are dangerous and harmful to human health and life.
We have heard about the case a long time ago, but only now have accusations been made. The analysis of the dried fruit showed that it was produced from stale eggs, and the addition of old cheese, lime and fishmeal was also detected. The product went to plants producing pasta, cookies, pates and mayonnaise.
Egg drought – what is it?
Dried eggs are obtained from eggs – in theory fresh, in a drying chamber. Whole eggs, only the yolks or the proteins are dried with hot air. It is very important that the dried production is controlled at every stage. What can be a threat to us after consuming dried eggs and with a whole list of adulterations?
- Bacteria E.coli – their toxin causes food poisoning. The first symptoms are diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sometimes fever, general weakness. The infection can lead to devastating cholera-like, red-like diarrhea, haemorrhagic enteritis and, consequently, uremic-hemolytic syndrome and thrombosis.
- Salmonella – causes dangerous food infections that can even lead to infection of internal organs and joint diseases. The first symptoms of poisoning are abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, high temperature.
- Cadmium – is one of the most toxic elements with a very long half-life – 15 years. Collects, among others, in the kidneys, bones and liver. It causes morphological and functional changes in organs. It increases the likelihood of cancer, especially of the kidneys and prostate.
- Lead – in poisoning, first there are gastrointestinal symptoms, then symptoms of the central nervous system. The kidneys and liver can also be damaged. Chronic poisoning causes anemia.
You are what you eat
The dried egg was produced in Greater Poland (in the vicinity of Kalisz to be exact), but it was spread throughout Poland. Despite the fact that the activities of the main defendant’s company were suspended in March 2011, we are not sure whether such practices do not take place in other plants. Especially that the scandal near Kalisz might never have come to light, if not for the problems with repayment of loans. This is what is terrifying. We can go with the times, accept and applaud progressive, economical and economic solutions. However, if we are unsure of our safety, we will never trust in any Prefabs, Half Prefabs and Enhancers. If we only have time and such an opportunity, let’s prepare meals ourselves with eggs instead of dried, from real flour instead of a mixture with leavening agents, with herbs instead of monosodium glutamate, with ham instead of MOM. As a last resort, it is worth looking only for ingredients that you have in your kitchen on the list of ingredients of the product you buy. Then we will have a chance that what we eat will not harm our health.
