Autumn is the time when our immunity weakens, the temperature often fluctuates, and we often dress inappropriately. We allow ourselves to be deceived by the sun outside, mentally functioning still partially in the summer, which means that on the streets, despite low temperatures, you see people dressed too lightly. Weakness during the transitional period and the resulting colds and flu are a common problem. We suggest how to avoid it.
One of the options is prophylaxis, i.e. considering a protective vaccination that will support the body’s immunity. However, it should be remembered that such solutions do not guarantee that we will not get sick, although they will effectively support our defensive reactions against infection. It is worth getting vaccinated against influenza, the complications of which in some people (children, people with weakened immunity, the elderly, pregnant women) can be very dangerous. So it is better to protect yourself in advance, at the very beginning of the autumn season.
Take care of yourself, or how to prevent infection and colds
Two things are important in strengthening immunity: physical activity and diet. The meals should now contain as much vitamin C as possible, which helps the body fight infections. It is present primarily in red pepper, parsley, citrus, as well as pickles – pickled cucumbers and cabbage. It is good to reach for natural antibiotics such as onion and garlic more and more often. It is also worth reaching for fish, which contain valuable omega-3 acids that strengthen the body, or take cod liver oil in capsules.
It is important to ventilate the apartment and the rooms where we spend the most time often and thoroughly. Air circulation is so important that we provide the body with fresh air and moisturize the nasal mucosa, thanks to which we hinder the “attacks” of pathogenic bacteria.
Our lifestyle also matters. Physical activity that will ensure our health is primarily walks and marches, at least half an hour long, which will support blood circulation, stimulate the muscles to action and harden the body for the coming of colder days. Walking in a park or forest, where the air is less polluted and where there are many trees (conifers secrete valuable essential oils), will have the most beneficial effect on us.
When it’s too late… What to do when you catch a cold?
The symptoms that something is wrong in the body are quite easy to recognize. You may notice a feeling of fatigue, poor appetite and, over time, runny nose, sore throat and gradually developing fever. If the temperature exceeds 38 degrees, you should not take antipyretics that reduce it. This is the body’s defensive reaction. In such situations, rest is important, in the case of fever – sweating under the covers, and most importantly, hydration of the body, because then it is easier to fight infection. During a runny nose and elevated body temperature, dehydration can occur. In addition, fluids help remove toxins from our body.
