The founding date of the Novy Svet Champagne House is considered to be 1878, when Prince Lev Golitsyn acquired the Novy Svet estate and decided to start a new, promising business here – the production of champagne.
History of the drink
Golitsyn had a goal – to get an exquisite drink that is not inferior to the best French samples.
In the New World, the prince created a nursery and a collection of vines, which numbered more than 600 varieties. As a result of many years of painstaking work, Golitsyn came to a conclusion that is still relevant today: “Grapes and wine are a product of the locality.”
They selected the best grape varieties that became the basis for local sparkling wines: the Pinot group, Chardonnay, Aligote, Rhine Riesling. They are still used by Crimean winemakers for the production of sparkling wines.
In parallel with the search for the right grape varieties, work was underway to build a system of tunnels for aging champagne. Most of them were dug in the monolithic rock of Koba-Kaya.
Several tunnels are below sea level, which allows you to maintain the temperature of 8 to 12 degrees all year round, which is necessary for aging champagne. The cellars have been preserved in excellent condition, and most of them are still used by the Novy Svet House of Champagne Wines.
XIX century: The first batches of champagne received wide international fame. Golitsyn was the first winemaker who received the right to print the coat of arms of the Russian Empire on the etiquette of his wines.
1896 In honor of the coronation of Emperor Nicholas II, Prince Golitsyn presented to the court a batch of his champagne under the brand name “Coronation”. This was the first time in the history of the coronation of Russian emperors that non-French wine was served to the court.
1900 At the World Exhibition in Paris, Novosvet Golitsyn champagne received the highest Grand Prix award.
After the death of Prince L.S. Golitsyn, his daughter Nadezhda Golitsyna became the heiress of the estate and the champagne production enterprise.
1917 After the October coup and the civil war, the estate in the New World was raided and looted many times. The situation relatively stabilized by 1920, the enterprise in the New World was nationalized. The countdown of a completely different time began, a different story.
December 1, 1920: Establishment of the Novy Svet sparkling wine factory.
Today, the Novy Svet House of Champagne Wines is a joint stock company. Under the leadership of General Director Alexey Petrovich Pugachev, many modern innovations are being prepared and implemented, which allow the company to successfully compete with leading European producers of classic champagne.
