The History of the Champagne Cocktail

The champagne cocktail has been known for over one hundred and fifty years.

The first mention of a drink with this name is found in the famous book by the American Jerry Thomas “The Bartender’s Handbook”, which was published back in 1862.

After that, there was no mention of Champagne until 1889, when a certain John Dougherty prepared a cocktail called “Suspenders” at a bartending competition and even received first prize for it.

Somewhat later, Daugherty admitted that he used a thoroughly forgotten recipe for the Champagne cocktail in the competition.

It is not known whether the bartender had to return his award, but the name “Suspenders” was safely forgotten, and the drink received its old name.

The Champagne cocktail is considered a celebratory drink. It is not easy to prepare, and the slightest inaccuracy in mixing or measuring the amount of ingredients can change its taste.

Proper Straw-red Champagne has a sweetish taste that changes over time. It is this change of taste during consumption that is the “highlight” of the cocktail.

Variations of the Champagne cocktail

  1. Bucks physical – sparkling wine, cherry brandy and gin, often orange juice is also added.

  2. Kobler – sparkling wine is the main ingredient, and whiskey is used instead of cognac.
