The SARS-CoV-2 virus that caused the pandemic is mutating all the time. Omicron BA.5 and BA.4 sub-variants already account for the majority of infections worldwide. A new BA sub-variant also appeared on the horizon in early June. 2.75, referred to by scientists as Centaurus. It has already reached Europe – it was detected in the Netherlands. The question remains whether Centaurus will trigger another wave.

The first case of a Centaurus

The sanitary service detected the first case of Centaurus in the Netherlands. A new COVID-19 sub-variant has been found in a sample from the center of the country. So far, it has been detected in 10 countries around the world.

«The variant BA.2.75 SARS-CoV-2 has been identified in the Netherlands. It was detected in a sample of June 26, 2022 from the Northeast Region of Gelderland » — informs the Dutch National Institute of Public Health on social media.

The mythical “centaur” has been around since May

The sub-variant called the Centaurus first appeared in India in May. Since then, the new form of the coronavirus has spread to around 10 countries, including the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Australia. The situation is constantly monitored by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Scientists tone down the alarmist comments, however, as currently no studies indicate that Centaurus has a greater ability to transmit faster, cause disease to become more severe, or the ability to bypass the human immune system.

“Current research suggests that the combination of infection and vaccination offers the best protection, so the current wave may help protect people from the fall in the fall caused by BA.2.75,” Prof. Paul Hunter, infectious disease expert at the University of East Anglia.
