If you have to buy a washing machine, you should figure out what a honeycomb drum is and whether it is worth buying a more expensive model for the sake of one unusual detail.
Commercials dedicated to washing machines offer improved technologies, new features, innovative solutions. These innovations include a honeycomb drum.
Regular perforated type
To understand what a honeycomb drum means, you need to know how a regular one works and how it is inferior to a modern analogue.
The perforated one is made of stainless steel, and its planes are pierced with hundreds of small holes. How and in what quantity the holes are located depends solely on the manufacturer’s idea, and drums can differ significantly in different brands and models. However, the general technology for conventional reels is the same.
The laundry is slightly pulled into the holes during washing due to the centrifugal force that is generated during rotation. Of course, things will not suffer significant damage in one or two washings, but with constant daily washing, you will notice fabric wear in a couple of months. Manufacturers make efforts to minimize this effect by thinking of gentle programs, but this does not mean that things are completely safe.
Differences of the honeycomb drum
The described effect is less pronounced in the reels to which the review is dedicated.
For the first time, the technology was invented and introduced into the design of a washing machine by Miele Corporation. The manufacturers explain that they were inspired by nature for the invention, and when creating the part, they focused on the fruits of bee labor – honeycombs.
Experts are sure that these beautiful words are a fairy tale and a smart move by marketers. All that connects it with bees is the inner surface, made in the form of honeycombs, in the corners of which there are small holes for the water flow. But the honeycomb drum certainly has advantages over the usual one.
Differences:
- gentle washing;
- less damage to the fabric compared to washing in conventional SM;
- more gentle spin;
- minimizing the “pulling” of clothing into holes.
Even with a visual inspection, it will be noticeable that the surface of the part is smoother and the holes are not so pronounced.
Advantages and disadvantages
Any technology quickly finds its adherents and opponents. Let’s start with the advantages that manufacturers, experts and users talk about:
- increased smoothness of the surface makes washing gentle;
- reduced holes retain water for a long time, creating a thin film – this protects things from friction;
- the size of the holes reduces the effect of “pulling”;
- honeycomb design aims to reduce friction.
Among the shortcomings, it is fair to name only the price. If there is no need for such an expensive purchase, it is better to choose a washer at the same price or cheaper, but with a large set of functions. But this is purely a buyer’s business – what to pay for and what not to.
Which type is better: honeycomb, perforated or bubble
Understanding which drum is better, it is difficult to give a definite answer. Each type has its own advantages.
- In a cell phone, things retain their appearance longer, but a machine with a Diamond or Softsteam drum costs an order of magnitude more expensive.
- The usual perforated one is cheaper, the choice of models with such a drum on the market is the widest, but they are less careful about things.
- Bubble can be ordinary and cellular, and is named so not for the design, but for the principle of washing. Such machines are called air bubble machines – read about them in more detail in the relevant article.
Whichever type you choose, first of all, the safety of things is affected by compliance with the rules of washing and operating the machine. Even in a regular drum on the correct mode, you can gently wash any thing.
