Celery seeds: how to plant and grow

Celery seeds pose some problems when growing: they are small and do not germinate well. But if you follow the rules, you can get a good harvest.

How to Grow Root Celery from Seeds?

It is customary to grow celery through seedlings. It is necessary to plant it one of the first, since it grows for a long time. Already in February, you need to prepare the soil in pots and start planting.

Celery seeds are not the only way to provide yourself with greens for the whole summer.

The soil should be fertile, loose and slightly alkaline. You can use rotted manure or humus in it. Good results are obtained by combining humus with sand. For 4 parts of humus, you can take 6 parts of sand.

The pots should be drained. The ground in them must first be moistened. For planting:

  1. Loosen the earth a little with the tip of a toothpick.
  2. Pour the seeds from the bags into a separate saucer, where each variety has its own container.
  3. Transfer the seeds on your finger to the pot and brush them onto the soil with a toothpick or other finger.
  4. Pour some soil into the pots to close the planting by 1 to 2 mm.
  5. Water the soil gently.
  6. Place a label with the variety name on each pot.
  7. Cover the pots with plastic wrap and place in a warm place.
  8. When seedlings appear, remove the foil and place the pots in a well-lit place at a temperature not exceeding 16 ° C.

You can dive seedlings in about a month, when 3 real leaves appear. You need to leave sprouts with developed roots, get rid of the rest. In addition to watering, the seedlings must be periodically loosened.

It is necessary to plant seedlings in open ground in mid-May at a distance of 20 cm from each other. The culture grows well next to cabbage, cucumbers and vegetable beans. Celery needs regular watering and loosening of row spacings: without this, the roots will not form. You can feed him twice a season, but this is not necessary. The culture is not afraid of the first frost, so you can keep it in the garden until October – November.

Alternative way to get green celery

If you do not plant leaf celery seeds, but use a store-bought one, the result will be no worse. Buy stalked celery and use it for food, after cutting off 10 cm from the root. Place this petiole in a container of water. Roots will quickly begin to appear on it.

After 10 days, the petiole with roots can be planted in a pot of soil, and in May it can be transferred to a permanent place in the garden. All summer long, you will enjoy the fresh herbs that “used” celery will provide.

To get a good root celery, it needs to be planted early and cared for carefully. But getting greens will be much easier.
