Cavinton – properties
Cavinton is a drug whose active ingredient is vinpocetine. This compound has a positive effect on the brain metabolism, which is associated with the improvement of blood flow to the brain, and due to the increased consumption of glucose and oxygen by the brain tissue, it increases the tolerance of cells to hypoxia. In addition, it accelerates the metabolic cycle of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain and inhibits the aggregation of platelets and reduces pathologically increased its viscosity. It has a protective effect on the nervous tissue, alleviating the harmful effects of cytotoxic reactions caused by amino acids. Another advantage of this active ingredient is its antioxidant effect.

Cavinton – application
Cavinton and Cavinton forte are used to treat acute cerebral ischemia, ischemic stroke and post-stroke conditions (parenteral therapy). Also used in chronic circulatory disorders in the choroid and retina, as well as senile dullness of hearing of all origins and tinnitus.
Cavinton – contraindications
Cavinton should not be used in case of hypersensitivity to vinpocetine or other drug ingredients. It cannot be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Cannot be used in the acute phase of hemorrhagic stroke and severe ischemic disease and cardiac arrhythmias. Do not use the drug in patients with fructose intolerance or deficiency of fructose-1,6-diphosphate phosphatase.
The drug is intended only for adults.
Cavinton – precautions
When administering Cavionton, special care should be taken in people taking anti-arrhythmic drugs, with increased intracranial pressure and with arrhythmia and long QT syndrome. ECG monitoring is recommended in patients with this syndrome or taking drugs that prolong QTc interval.
Cavinton – dosage
Cavinton should be dosed by slow drip infusion. The usual starting dose for adults is 20 mg diluted in 500 ml of solution for infusion. Depending on patient tolerance, the dose may be increased to 1 mg / kg body weight daily. The duration of treatment varies from 10 to 14 days. The daily dose for a patient weighing 70 kg is 50 mg per day (equivalent to 5 ampoules in 500 ml of solution for infusion). Cavinton should not be administered by intramuscular injection. It should not be administered intravenously in undiluted form.
After completion of intravenous dosing, it is recommended to continue oral treatment. The dose should be 1 tablet Cavinton Forte (10 mg) 3 times a day or 2 tablets Cavinton (5 mg) 3 times a day.
Cavinton – side effects
Cavinton and Cavinton forte can cause changes in blood pressure (mainly by lowering it), you may experience flushing to the head, there is also a slight risk of phlebitis. Rarely, sleep disorders (insomnia, somnolence), headache and dizziness, weakness, sweating, ST segment depression, QT prolongation, tachycardia and extra heart contraction, nausea, heartburn, dry mouth, increased liver enzymes, skin hypersensitivity reactions .
Due to the content of sodium metabisulfite, the preparation may cause severe allergic reactions and bronchospasm.
