Causes, signs and symptoms, how to treat a stomach ulcer?

What is a stomach ulcer?

A stomach ulcer is a chronic disease in which trophic disorders occur in the gastric mucosa. Most often, an ulcer occurs in men aged 20 to 50 years. The disease is characterized by frequent relapses in spring and autumn. The cause of stomach ulcers, as a rule, are frequent stresses that strain the human nervous system, which, in turn, causes spasms of the muscles and blood vessels of the gastrointestinal tract. As a result, there is a violation of the blood supply to the stomach, and gastric juice begins to have a detrimental effect on the mucous membrane, which leads to the formation of an ulcer.

But still, the main cause of stomach ulcers is the Helicobacter pylori bacterium and the imbalance between the protective mechanisms of the stomach and aggressive factors, that is, the mucus secreted by the stomach cannot cope with pepsin (the enzyme responsible for digesting proteins) and hydrochloric acid.

Causes, signs and symptoms, how to treat a stomach ulcer?

Most often, peptic ulcer is diagnosed in men between the ages of 20 and 40 – in about 70% of cases. Somewhat less often, the disease is detected at an older age – in 20% of cases. Recently, there has been a trend towards an increase in the incidence of the disease among women.

The frequency of occurrence of the disease depends not only on age and gender, but also on the professional activity of a person. Thus, those people whose work is associated with the risk of abdominal injury, such as shoemakers, and those who do not have the opportunity to regularly consume liquid food, such as railway workers, suffer more often. In addition, gastric ulcer in different regions of one country occurs with different frequency, which is determined by the dietary habits of local residents.
